What is the Talisman Tamarind? • Asam Jawa, or Tangkal Asam in Sundanese, is a tropical tree, which grows pods that bears the same name. • It can be found in tropical countries • Tamarind originally came from tropical Africa • It is sweet and sour • The fruit is used in Asian dishes and can be used as a cure for sickness

Some Cures The Tamarind can… • Balances cholesterol • Be used as a laxative • Cure baby fever • Treat boils • Thrush (infection of the mouth by fungus) • Cure eczema (when skin becomes rough) • Cure hemorrhoids • Help digestion • Cure bile disorders • Cast for broken bones (Tamarind Paste) Can be made into juice, mix with leaves and stalks, or eat it just the way it is

  4. Factors • Social - Tamarind is a common spice found in kitchens. People use it to sweeten their food. It is common in South East Asia and in tropical African countries. Many people consume it for health and pleasure. The fruit and its medicinal recipes are common among the society

  5. Factors • Cultural – People of different cultures have used tamarind for flavoring and medicine for years. It was commonly used before western medicine. Tamarind is available in many languages, and the word tamarind itself came from Arabic tamrhindi, meaning Indian date. This is proof of a mix of cultures.

  6. Factors • Economic – Tamarind can be commonly found in markets. Imported tamarind can be also be found. There is no tamarind medicine for sale but tamarind syrups and other tamarind products are, which means that it can be purchased and increase trade and the economy.

Effects on People, Society and Environment • Positive • It helped cure sickness • It helped make food tastier • Picking Tamarind does not require chopping trees • The leaves provides as food for livestock • Tamarind helps stabilize soil because of its deep roots • Negative • Tamarind with Herbs and Drugs will increase the risk of bleeding • Not recommended for people with allergies
