Chemistry Silver Tree Reaction Procedure
Step 1 • APPARATUS AND MATERIAL • 1. Large Test Tube • 1” x 1” piece of Para film 0.10M AgNO3 • One piece of Copper Wire • One piece of filter paper • One short stem funnel • One ( 250 – 500 ml ) Erlenmeyer Flask
Step 2 • 1. Label the large test tube with your group number or initials. • 2. Pour enough silver nitrate to within 1 in. of the top of the tube. • 3. Buff the piece of copper wire with sand paper until it shines. • 4. Weigh the copper to the nearest 0.001g. • 5. Coil the wire and place it in the tube of silver nitrate. • 6. Place the Para film on the top of the tube with the straight end of the wire protruding out the top. • 7. Place in a safe place until the next session.
Period Two • 1. Shake the silver off the wire by rigorous shaking of the wire. • 2. Pull the wire out and wipe with a previously weighed piece of filter paper. • (SEE DEMONSTRATION OF INSTRUCTOR) • 3. Place filter paper in the funnel and make sure it is wet, and place the funnel in an Erlenmeyer (250-500 ml ) flask. • 4. Pour as much liquid off the top of the test tube as possible without losing silver into the sink. • 5. Pour the remaining slush into the filter paper, washing the inside of the test tube with water to dislodge remaining silver from the sides of the tube into the funnel. • 6. Place the small piece of filter paper used to wipe the copper wire in the middle of the filter paper and remove it from the funnel. • 7. Allow the paper to dry overnight on a paper towel.

Complete • After the liquid passes through the funnel, remove the filter paper, unfold and allow the paper with the silver to dry. Funnel with paper Silver Unfolded filter paper
Reaction • Copper + Silver nitrate --- > Silver + Copper (II) nitrate • Cu + 2AgNO3 --- > 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2 • Mass of Cu Lost / atomic mass = moles Cu • Mass of Ag gain / atomic mass = moles Ag • Mole Ratio = mole Ag/ mole Cu • = 2 / 1
Example • Mass of Cu before RXN = 2.424 g • Mass of Cu After RXN = 2.297 g • Mass of Cu lost 0.127 g • Moles Cu : 0.127 g x 1.00 mole = 0.002 mol • 63.5 g Cu • Mass of Ag gain in RXN = 0.432 g • Moles Ag: 0.432 g x 1.00 mole = 0.004 mol • 108 g Ag • Mole Ratio = moles Ag = 0.004 = 2 • moles Cu 0.002 1
The Law of Conservation • The Law of Conservation is Satisfied. • Cu + 2AgNO3 --- > 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2 • 63.5 g + 2[ 108+ 14.0 + 3(16.0)]--- > 2(108) + 63.5 +2[14.0 + 3(16.0] • 404 g = 404 g • The reaction show that 2 moles of silver are replaced by 1 mole of copper. • This is the Law of Multiple Proportions.
