  1. Protists. The Other Form of Life. Chapter 21.1-21.3

  2. The Great Mystery(these are not notes, these are points to discuss) Believed to have been first Eukaryote Most unicellular, not all. Most diverse kingdom Some protistscloser related to other kingdoms than they are other protists. Six Major groups

  3. Excavata Excavates – photosynthesizers to pathogens Giardia – intestinal parasite Euglena – Photosynthetic found in ponds

  4. Chromoalveolata • Chromalveolates – “pigments” , photosynthetic ancestors

  5. Cercozoa, Foraminifera, Radiolaria Many pseudopods, many have protective shells

  6. Rhodophyta Red Algae (most are multicellular)

  7. Amoebozoa Cytoplasmic streaming, pseudopods

  8. Choanozoa Alone or with a colony, aquatic, close to animals. Trap food and eat it.

  9. 22.2 Protists Structure and Function How do Protists move? 2. Change in shape 3. Pseodopods 4. “Cytoplasmic Projection” 5. Amoebas 4. Powered by actin. 5. Found in muscles Amoeba in action!

  10. 2. Specific Organelles 3. Cilia 4. Microtubules 4. Short, numerous 4. Move like oars on a boat 4. Known as Ciliates Cilia is to Crew... Paramecium

  11. 3. Flagella 4. Microtubules 4. Long, one or two 4. Spin like propeller or wave like motion at tip 4. Known as Flagellates Euglena on the Run

  12. 2. Passive Movement 3. Most protists nonmotile 4. Wind 4. Water

  13. 1. How do protists reproduce? 2. Asexually 3. Cell Division (Mitosis) 4. Rapid 4. Genetically Identical 3. Releasing Spores 4. Sporangium

  14. 2. Asexually and Sexually 3. First conjugation 4. Sharing genetic material 3. Followed by Mitosis

  15. 2. Sexual Reproduction 3. Alteration of Generation 4. Between Haploid and Diploid

  16. With your partner answer… How should we classify protists? What form of movement do you believe is the most efficient and why? What form of reproduction do you think is the most efficient and why?
