UMUC Greenhouse Gas Inventory Methodology and Results March 4, 2009 Sean Williamson UMUC GHG Inventory
Outline • Knowing your institution • Inventory approach • Stakeholder involvement • Data gathering • Analysis and reporting • Inventory results • Lessons learned and recommendations UMUC GHG Inventory
Knowing Your Institution • Every college and university is different • Acknowledge that you will need to tailor the inventory to the institution • Know the stakeholders • Know the community size, physical size and campus programs • Know recent past and future changes on campus (physical and operational) UMUC GHG Inventory
Inventory Approach (1) • 1 - Acquaint yourself with available resources (ACUPCC Reports, CA-CP GHG Calculator) • 2 - Early stakeholder involvement • Group meeting to emphasize team effort • Identify roles and responsibilities • Stakeholders must help craft inventory scope and boundaries UMUC GHG Inventory
Inventory Approach (2) • 3 - Establish scope and boundaries • Temporal • UMUC was limited by data availability • Operational • UMUC Inventory included all 3 scopes • Physical • UMUC selected financial control or specifically, where electric utilities are paid UMUC GHG Inventory
Inventory Approach (3) • 4 - Data gathering • Start early and get data holder buy-in • Management of personalities and time • Where preparation and knowledge pay off • Where temporal scope of inventory may need to be refined UMUC GHG Inventory
Inventory Approach (4) • Data gathering continued • Quantifying commuter GHG emissions • Permits, transportation surveys or other… • UMUC commuter emissions based on a data query involving… • All face-to-face students in DC metro area and MD – AND all stateside online students • Origin and destination of trip to create a trip (f-2-f only) • Number of roundtrips taken for each unique trip based on… • Number of students, frequency of class meetings UMUC GHG Inventory
Inventory Approach (5) • Analysis • Make assumptions abundantly clear • Confirm that assumptions are reasonable with data holder as they are made • Let CA-CP GHG Calculator do heavy lifting • Reporting • ACUPCC Reporting website is easy to use • AASHE staff is very helpful UMUC GHG Inventory
Results (1) UMUC GHG Emissions by Sector UMUC GHG Inventory
Results (2) UMUC GHG Inventory
Results (3) • Interesting finding • Student emissions in the context of a distance- learning institution Take away: Online courses result in less student commuting and lower GHG emissions UMUC GHG Inventory
Lessons Learned from UMUC GHG Inventory 1 - Consistently stick to scope definition throughout data gathering process 2 - Reconcile data figures from multiple sources (e.g., student size vs. commuter size) 3 - Avoid double counting 4 - Make the inventory as comprehensive as possible (e.g., commuter related emissions) 5 - Standardize updates and improve future inventory process 6 - An inventory is a living document and measuring GHGs can be like an art UMUC GHG Inventory
