Welcome to the 2007 Joint Annual Meeting of NAPHSIS and NCHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics
Two Suggested Items for Discussion Over the Course of the Conference and at the Town Hall Meeting • VSCP and NDI Contracts – where we are and how we will proceed • Publishing strategies for new data items on births – Demonstrate to potential funders that critical issues can be addressed by these items
Future VSCP Funding Mechanism • No Cooperative Agreements - just Contracts - VSCP and NDI Combined • Contracts will be different than in the past - we need to have the funds to complete an entire segment within the contract; thus • We may need to contract by data set and quarter which will allow for funding availability and opportunities as they arise. • We will be working with PGO on a contract shell and will share it with you when available • We may need to continue Purchase Orders during an interim period.
New Data Items-How to Publish? • To attract funding we need to find a way to give high visibility to the new data items by publishing results and still meet current NAPHSIS restrictions on new data items based on existing funding constraints • Solution 1: Collaborative effort to publish papers on new items in an NCHS publication • Solution 2: Collaborative effort to publish papers on new data items in a public health journal supplement purchased by NCHS • Solution 3: Use the MMWR
Pros and Cons • All assume the availability of NCHS files to State authors • For NCHS pubs - more control and lower cost • Journal supplements provide more independence to State authors – but expensive if no one submits! • MMWR -a forum to other CDC programs who initially were interested in these items –good for short reports
