Latest Enhancements to JICS: Next Generation User Interface Presented by Jude BowmanJenzabar, Inc. Oct. 17th, 2014
Where we were • JICS portal has powerful features and functionality that were inaccessible to most, locked away behind a very steep learning curve • Most people in charge of managing pages would use the default or need an administrator to make changes
The plan • A multi-phase project to redesign all aspects of administration in JICS to make them more accessible, intuitive, and user-friendly. • Dubbed internally “NGUI” for Next Generation User Interface • The phases: • Phase 1: The new “Add a page” in 7.5.5, took a 10-step process for adding new functionality and made it work in 2 clicks. • Phase 2: Overhaul of all aspects of page management in 8.1 • Future phases will give similar treatment to context management and other areas of the portal
Phase 2 –Page & Feature Management • What do we mean by “Page Management?” All the settings, permissions, and functionality related to setting up and managing a page. • Everything in the “Edit page” area • Properties • Content • Layout • Permissions • Feature Management • Everything in the “PortletWrench” area • Preferences • Settings • Permissions
The legacy version • The two big(gest) problems: • Not discoverable • Not usable
The “Admin Bar” • Page with one feature • Access • Options • Settings • Page with multiple features • Layout • Rearrange
