Still in Pre-Proposal Mode – HQ Review • Defined Review Objectives w EN: Dan Crichton, Ben Feist: • 1. Capture the State of PDS Search • A. Search systems architecture • Factors: Hardware: search engine deficiencies, scalability, identities • Software: PDS4, Meta-data exchange, inefficiencies / redundancies • Institutional factors: International collaborators, e.g. ESA, IPDA, JAXA • B. API support • Types: Visualization, Analysis (GIS, Mapping for example), Data integrity • Factors: Hardware: Large data transfers for Big Data, scalability • Software: Functions, deficiencies, limitations • International: Continue work towards International data standards • C. PDS Web interfaces • Types: Centralized search vs federated search system, trade study • Factors: Hardware: Performance / load balancing for large deliveries, scalability • Software: Common UI and UX, website configuration trade study • Institutional factors: Search of international archives CMU PDS Review Proposal PDS Project Office / McClanahan

CMU PDS Review Proposal • Evaluate PDS against Future Trends: • Enhance Usability, Discoverability • A. Search systems architecture • Factors: Hardware: search engine deficiencies, scalability, identities • Software: PDS4, Meta-data exchange, inefficiencies / redundancies • Institutional factors: International collaborators, e.g. ESA, IPDA, JAXA • B. API support • Types: Visualization, Analysis (GIS, Mapping for example), Data integrity • Factors: Hardware: Large data transfers for Big Data, scalability • Software: Functions, deficiencies, limitations • International: Continue work towards International data standards • C. NASA HQ:CMU PDS Review 1. How do we solve the problem that our users have with a non-unified search engine?A. Much search ambiguity will be solved with PDS4 migration.B. Post-award CMU team will do preliminary interviews to derive criterion for a cost-benefit analysis to be performed at evaluation time.C. Evaluation will be performed against PDS future state objectives.
CMU PDS Review Proposal • NASA HQ:CMU PDS Review 2: How do we improve the user experience” • Very little user specific information or interests. • We do have industry best practices, technology trends, • - Earth Science, Interplanetary counterparts • * PDS users have similar science, visualization, support needs. • Note: No HCI evaluation. • A. CMU is not equipped to do an HCI proposal. • B. Formal evaluations / experimentation required • C. Possibly at a later date
CMU PDS Review Proposal NASA HQ:CMU PDS Review3. How will the move to PDS3 to 4 help with the unified-search A. Consistent metadata – PDS4 metadata adheres to an explicit information model to describe archive metadata. Data archived under PDS4 must use this metadata which is strictly validated and rigorously developed. i.e. Data across missions use the same set of terms, <= PDS3 Not B. Shared Web Services and APIs - PDS4 supports the concept of shared web services and APIs to support common search indices both within and across PDS nodes and international sites. Supports multi-level search of archives. Still working this ….
CMU PDS Review Proposal … the ultimate success of the CMU evaluation will be dependent upon: The availability of critical PDS node personnel and the quality of the information that is available and provided to the CMU team during their discussions. Follow through $ by NASA HQ and action by the PDS nodes in enacting the proposed recommendations.
