Congratulations Team #MINTYFRESH! Veronica Caballero, Alison Phan, Jordan Ha, Bell Mingcharoenwong
Leslie Lab – Department of Pharmacology • Principle Investigator: Dr. Frances Leslie, Graduate Dean • The Francis Leslie UC Irvine laboratory focuses on an examination of the effects of abused drugs on the developing brain. • My area of study • Exploring and discovering drug reinforcement pathways (neuronal) • Alcohol, Nicotine, and Cocaine in Adults/Adolescents & Males/Females • My responsibilities • Catheterization Surgery • Self Administration Experiments • Why I chose the lab? • Drug addiction Elias Almaz
Athena Breast Health Network • Principal Investigator: Dr. Hannah Lui Park • UC-wide collaboration • Davis, LA, San Francisco, San Diego • Recruitment of mammogram patients • Administer questionnaire (family history, health, lifestyle) • Identify both low-risk and high-risk patients • Collection of blood specimens • Goal: earlier detection and prevention of breast cancer and improvement of breast health Kathleen Nguyen
Athena Breast Health Network • Why did I choose this lab ? • Emphasis on patient care • How did I get into the lab ? • Bio 199 website • Did research on the lab • Contacted the PI (personal description, interest in lab, personal testimonies) • Interview with the PI Kathleen Nguyen
Wilder-Smith Lab • Wide variety of studies: clinical, benchwork, animals • Area of study: dentistry/oral medicine • Non-invasive diagnostics: laser, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescence, polarization • Process • Applicants: pre-dental, VERY competitive GPA, 2 year commitment, motivated, team player • Round 1: Interview with lab members • Round 2: Interview with Dr. Wilder-Smith • Our experiences in the lab Brian Jow & Greg Chan
Wilder-Smith Lab (cont.) • Near-Infrared Laser Imaging Project • Problem: Can’t see through dental sealants, restorations (fillings), etc. • How to assess demineralization or caries? • Low-energy, cost-efficient wavelength of infrared light to image • Form contrast between healthy/diseased tissue • Clinical Trial of Livionex Dental Gel • Traditional toothpaste: Abrasive, detergent, fluoride, etc. • Abrasion may worsen dental sensitivity, gingival bleeding, demineralization, etc. • Livionex: No abrasive, no detergent • Chemically reduce adhesion of bacterial biofilm to teeth • How Livionex reduces gum bleeding, plaque accumulation, plaque reaccumulation, gingivitis Brian Jow & Greg Chan
Galassetti Lab • Clinical Research Lab • Subjects = humans • Area(s) of study • Diabetes • Obesity • Exercise My Experience Finding a Lab • Used BioSci website Positions Listing • Applied to a good # of labs • Some didn’t reply • Some didn’t have openings • Some just said No • Be patient! • Interview • One on one with PI Newsha Do
Postpartum & Depression Lab Principal Investigator: IlonaYim • Bio-psychological processes in health and disease, specifically as they relate to human stress • Stressors during pregnancy and its effects on postpartum depression • Individual differences in stress reactivity (hormonal, immune, genetic) • Placental pCRH, cortisol, psychiatric disorders Kristine Angeles
My Past & Present Duties • Wet Lab • Cortisol & Circadian Rhythm • Placental pCRH • 2,000 variables • Clinical Interview with psychiatrists/clinicians • N = 100 pregnant women • SKID, EPDS, CES-D, Emotional Stroop • T1, T2, T3 Kristine Angeles
Healthy Mom and Baby Study • Dr. PathikWadhwa • Researches the role of biological and behavioral processes on fetal/infant development • Home visits, questionnaires, behavioral assessments • How I got involved • Emailed the research coordinator, interview What I do - Data management, prepare baby scrapbooks, assist coordinators Vina Le
Research Requirements • Bio Sci 194S • Safety and Ethics, Offered Winter Quarter • Bio Sci 94 • http://www.bio.uci.edu/students/undergraduates/research/#general
Finding Research • Bio 199 Positions Listing • http://www.bio.uci.edu/students/undergraduates/research/bio-199-positions/ • May not be fully updated • Great starting point! • Faculty Profile Listing • http://www.faculty.uci.edu/ • Search for using key terms, review profiles, read papers • Some profiles may be old • Search PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed)
Things to Consider When Choosing a Lab • Interest • Find something that genuinely interests you & that you’re passionate about! • What will I learn? • Subject area • Structure of lab • Clinical, bench work, etc. • Will I be able to have direct contact with PI? • Size of lab • Know purpose of lab, any recent news about lab, search for recent literature from lab (PubMed, Google Scholar, UCI libraries)
Applying to a Lab • Email the Professor / Graduate Students in Lab • Spend a lot of time writing a formal email. It is your first chance to impress. • Introduce yourself, demonstrate basic understanding of PI’s work. • Ask a question about recent work and open the option of meeting up to discuss it. • If positions are available, a well written email will make an impact. • If you need help writing your email, schedule a meeting with a UROP councilor. • Treat your interview as a formal interview and be prepared for basic questions about the research and a brief discussion. • NOTE: Interview could also have nothing to do with research.
Before Deciding on a lab, REMEMBER! • Not all Bio199 labs are created equal • Know what each lab expects of you: responsibilities, time commitment, etc. • Current Bio199 students in lab are a great resource for asking about first hand experience
Awards & Achievements • UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) • A grant awarded to complete your research and present a poster • Tips on how to get started: • http://www.urop.uci.edu/opportunities.html • Excellence in Research • Write a paper and present regarding your research • 4 quarters minimum of BIO SCI research • Receive Excellence in Research award and publication in school journal • http://www.bio.uci.edu/students/undergraduates/research/#s5
