Slavery Children of slaves were not slaves themselves. You could not be born into slavery in the Aztec world. • Slaves could marry other slaves and even freewomen. • If a slave got away and managed to run to the palace without being stopped, that slave was immediately free. The only person who could chase that slave was the master’s son. If anyone interfered with the race, that person became a slave.
Aztec Geography • The Aztec capital city was Tenochtitlan, nowadays Mexico city. • They were surrounded by mountains and they literally lived in the middle of a lake. • They fought many battles. About 200 miles to the east was the coast upon which Cortez appeared.
There are many Aztec gods and beliefs. Some of these gods are • Tonatiuh - The Sun god • Metztli - The Moon god • Tlaltecuhtli - Goddess of the Earth • Chalchiuhtlicue - Goddess of spring • CentzonHuitznahua - God of the stars • Ehecatl the Wind god Aztec Religion
Culture • 3: Tattoos also played an important role in the Aztec culture. They showed respect and many meanings to the gods. • 1: Pottery was very popular in the Aztec land. • 2:Aztecs danced to pray. They also danced to show social, political, and any other issues going on in their lives.
Daily Life • 1: At about age 20, men married women who were ages 14-15. • 3:Some of the games they played included a ball game similar to one played by the ancient Maya. • 2:The birth of a baby was a really big deal. The Aztecs welcomed all life. The birth of a boy or a girl was celebrated.
Interesting Facts • 1: The ancient Aztecs invented a game called Volador, the flying bird game. • 3:Today, well-trained Mexican acrobats perform this wonderful spectacle . • 2: The game went something like this. First, all the players climbed a 60-90 foot pole. After they reached the top, they each tied a rope to the top of the pole. Hanging on tightly with their legs, they spread their arms wide, kicked off, and sailed around the pole like eagles until they reached the ground again. Many spectators gathered to watch the flying birds. It was a very dangerous sport.
