Mental & Emotional Disorders • What is a disorder? • This is a disturbance in the normal function of a part of the body. • Treatment can include medication, counseling or both.
Anxiety Disorders • This is a disorder which intense anxiety or fear keeps a person from functioning normally. • Such as…? • These can turn into a phobia • Which is an exaggerated fear of specific situation or object.
Anxiety Disorders Pounding heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, nausea. A need to perform behaviors over and over again such as hand washing, counting, hoarding, or arranging possessions. • Panic Disorder • Obsessive Compulsive

Main Ideas • Describe two mood disorders.
Mood Disorders • Person undergoes changes in mood that seem inappropriate or extreme. • Such as Bipolar Disorder • A person with this will experience cycles of alternating high and low periods.
Mood Disorder • Major Depression is another type of mood disorder • Very serious mood disorder in which people lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything. • Many times this comes with the depression “side” of Bipolar Disorder
Warning signs of depression • Irritability, anger, anxiety • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt • Lack of energy • Pessimism (Negativity) • Thoughts of death or suicide • Putting blame on other people for their problems.
Schizophrenia • Severe mental disorder in which people lose contact with reality. • People have hallucinations in which they see or hear things that are not actually there. • Medications are available to allow schizophrenics to live a functional life.
