  4. Fact or Myth?? • Mental and Emotional problems are not true illnesses? • MYTH • People with mental and emotional problems can just “shake it off.” • MYTH

  5. Mental & Emotional Disorders • What is a disorder? • This is a disturbance in the normal function of a part of the body. • Treatment can include medication, counseling or both.

  6. Anxiety Disorders • This is a disorder which intense anxiety or fear keeps a person from functioning normally. • Such as…? • These can turn into a phobia • Which is an exaggerated fear of specific situation or object.

  7. Anxiety Disorders Pounding heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, nausea. A need to perform behaviors over and over again such as hand washing, counting, hoarding, or arranging possessions. • Panic Disorder • Obsessive Compulsive

  12. Mood Disorders • Person undergoes changes in mood that seem inappropriate or extreme. • Such as Bipolar Disorder • A person with this will experience cycles of alternating high and low periods.

  13. Mood Disorder • Major Depression is another type of mood disorder • Very serious mood disorder in which people lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything. • Many times this comes with the depression “side” of Bipolar Disorder

  14. Warning signs of depression • Irritability, anger, anxiety • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt • Lack of energy • Pessimism (Negativity) • Thoughts of death or suicide • Putting blame on other people for their problems.

  15. Schizophrenia • Severe mental disorder in which people lose contact with reality. • People have hallucinations in which they see or hear things that are not actually there. • Medications are available to allow schizophrenics to live a functional life.

  19. How do you know…??? • You Might Need Help If… • Feeling sad or angry for two weeks or longer. • Spend all your time alone. • Feelings affect your sleep, eating habits, schoolwork, or relationships with family and peers. • Feel “out of control,” or feel worried or nervous all the time.

  22. What kind of help? • Drug Treatment • Medicines are not right for everyone • Medicines do not treat every mental/emotional problem • Medicines are not meant as a replacement for therapy. • Psychologist • Mental health professional who is trained to perform therapy

  23. What kind of help? • Clinical Social Worker (CSW) • Licensed, certified mental profession with a master’s degree in social work • At Orchard Farm, this would be Mrs. Olendorff or Mrs. Dunkmann.
