Proposed Evidence-Based Practices to Reduce Recidivism and Improve Institutional Behavior for the Segregated Management Unit [Aaron Akindiya] Walden University
Proposal Objectives: • Recommend institutional changes based on evidence-based researches. • Improve institutional culture using social learning principles. • Promote positive inmate behavior through select program intervention; Project BRITE. • Encourage institutional development through staff training.
SOCIAL LEARNING PRINCIPLES • Behaviors that reflect positive results are more likely to be copied by others; • Consequences should matter; so that, behaviors should matter; • Involves communication (Wooldredge & Smith, 2018, p. 88).
EFFECTIVE APPLICATION OF SOCIAL LEARNING PRINCIPLES • Positive behaviors are recognized; • Positive behaviors are rewarded; • Negative behaviors should have fair punishments; • Gradual sanctions for negative behaviors; • Severe punishments should only be a last resort (p. 90)
BEHAVIORAL REINFORCEMENT TO INCREASE TREATMENT ENGAGEMENT (Project BRITE) • Positive reinforcement of desired behaviors; • Encourages participation within the institution; • Promotes trust between the participating inmates and the program administrators; • Based on the concept of Contingency Management (Burdon, et. al., 2011, p. 2)
PROJECT BRITE CONCEPTUAL MODEL Motivation Attendance Retention Completion Aftercare Participation Targeted Behaviors Behavioral Reinforcement Treatment Engagement Psycho-social Functioning Drug Use Figure 1. Chart showing the Project BRITE conceptual Model. From “Developing and Implementing a Positive Behavioral Reinforcement Intervention in Prison-Based Drug Treatment: Project BRITE,” by Burdon, et. al., 2011, Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 7, p. 14. Criminal Behavior
PERSONNEL TRAINING • Allows the institution to have better chance of achieving goals; • Should focus on identifying the necessary skills and attitude; • Should have measurable outcomes (Ameen & Loeffler-Cobia, 2010, p. 5)
COMMON SKILLS NEEDED TO ENHANCE INSTITUTIONAL CULTURE • Analytical and critical thinking • Communicability • Ethical reasoning • Openness to change • Proper use of reinforcement strategies (p. 7)
DEVELOPING ASSESSMENT TO EVALUATE STAFF PERFORMANCE • Identify the frameworks that the content will be based upon; • Develop assessment questions based on the identified framework; • Validate required changes if necessary; • Finalize the assessment form (p. 6)
