Your Self Concept • Mental image you have if yourself • Your personal beliefs and decision making skills will influence your self concept • Strong, positive self concept is important to: • Believe in your capabilities • Believe you can control your life • Exercise self discipline and self control • Use effective communication skills • Demonstrate flexibility and interity

  3. Self Esteem • Feeling of self worth • Positive self concept means confidence and satisfaction in yourself • Positive self esteem means you recognize and value your uniqueness • People with low self esteem often tend to see themselves as failures and avoid everyday challenges

  4. Self Assessment • Process of taking stock of your interests, aptitudes, and abilities • Helps you better plan for the future • Makes it easier to find hobbies and choose elective courses • Take self assessment seriously

  5. Interests • Activities, events, and ideas that you like • Once you determine your interest areas, surround yourself with resources – people, internet information, elective courses – that relate to that interest area

  6. Career Interest • Learning about different careers and occupations helps you determine what careers interest you • Job Shadowing, Internships, Volunteering – could help to validate skills and tasks needed for careers

  7. APPTITUDE VERSES ABILITY • Aptitude is a person’s natural physical and mental talents for learning • Example – Aptitude for writing; writer, web-site contributor • Ability – is a task or skill you have already developed. Abilities are learned through training and practice • Example – Michael Jordan -baseball
