Martin Luther King Jr.1926-1968 Idea Synthesist for “The Giver” Presentation by Katherine Cornell Period 2
What is the idea synthesist? The idea synthesist task is to find a person with 2 similar characteristics to a character in the novel. The connection should be the traits and problems overcome between the person and character.
Who was Martin Luther King? A man with wisdom, spirit, hope, integrity, intelligence, courage, strength, and respect. The man who pushed himself to represent African Americans, to make them have a right to know, a right to live, and a right to vote. He once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” The children no matter what color, grew up in an age of segregation- and nobody stopped it because not a lot of people thought it was wrong.
Choices… we all make them,But are they always the right one? Choices- an act or instance of choosing; selection; the power to choose Jonas’ Choices- Jonas made the choice of leaving behind the community and going to “Elsewhere”, he wanted to help improve society to make it realize what's out there. MLK Choices- MLK made the courageous choice to stand out, and use his intelligence to help re-create America into it’s new day and age The only difference between MLK and Jonas was the fact MLK was happy with his choice, and Jonas regretted his.
Martin Luther King’s Dream Spread-cubanexilequarter.blogspot.com Jonas’ idea to spread the memories was to go to each community and beyond and talk to people. Martin Luther King put that same concept into use in this picture.
MLK to JonasTheir Dreams • MLK “sought equality for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice through peaceful protest.” • He was one of the main voices that helped persuade the government into passing the 1964 Civil Rights Act. • Martin Luther King said he had a dream, that all men would be created equal no matter what color skin they may have. • MLK marched, to unite the world hand in hand, no matter what you look like, what color your skin, or how you are. • Jonas had a dream, that people would have emotion, love, joy, and happiness. There would be no sameness. Everyone could be different. • He wanted to tell the Communities what there is out there, that it is not all perfect.
Segregationwww.prezi.com This is a major example of segregation and the fact that African Americans were separated from other people, and the fact the government/police would take authority.
Person to Text:Characteristics portrayed by Jonas and MLK- Belief, Wisdom, Intelligence, Courage, and Honor/Respect MLK: • He stood out in his role and many people respectedand looked up to him • He had a belief in the creation of equality for all people, he believed in the possibility and was optimistic about it. • “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” • He was wise, MLK knew how things should’ve been handled, so he properly executed his idea of equality. • MLK had been courageous, he put himself out there, not a lot of me would do that even for a problem as big as this. • Martin Luther King possessed great intelligence! Received his Doctorate in 1955 Jonas: • “But sir,” Jonas suggested, “since you have so much power-” The man corrected him. “Honor” he said firmly. “I have great honor. So will you. But you will find that that is not the same as power.” (pg 84) • Jonas had wisdom . He realized that “If he had stayed, he would have starved in other ways. He would have lived a life hungry for feelings, for color, for love.” (pg.177) • “We’re almost there, Gabriel,” he whispered, feeling quite certain without knowing why…Inside his freezing body, his heart surged with hope. They started down.” (pg. 181-182) This scene in the book represented Jonas’ belief in getting to start a new life. • “Intelligence,” she said. WE arte all aware that ??Jonas has been a top student throughout his school days.” (pg. 63) • Jonas showed Courage throughout the whole book. He took a stand in his community so that his world can experience- REAL LIFE. With real feelings and emotions.
The Giver- Applewww.picturebookreport.com Jonas realized things were changing around him, although other people didn’t see that. It was his turning point of not just living life just like everybody else, but actually wanting to be different– wanting to change the world. Just like MLK- he saw a problem and took it into his own hands. Working to gradually improve.
Time Difference 1960 The Giver- Community Sameness was the main concept People had no choices or opinions People didn’t realize the truth— No one knew differently or saw the before There were very high expectations and responsibilities • Segregation took place • African Americans had no rights • People wanted a change, they wanted to be equal • Many people protested in civil ways • They knew they had to make a change
Close your eyes… Picture the world in the 1960’s Now… Picture Jonas’ world The world’s are completely different but underneath the picture was a layer of fight, dreams, and imagination. “I have a dream…” ww.Dragoart.com
