Assessment of Human Resources Management Coursework in Pharmacy Curricula: Phase IIJohn Pedey-Braswell and Dana P. HammerUniversity of Washington School of Pharmacy PHASE 2 RESULTS METHODS OBJECTIVE • Exploratory, descriptive study conducted in two phases: • Phase I (Jan-Aug 2002): • All US,PR pharmacy schools’ entry-level Pharm.D.curricular websites reviewed for required course titles including: • pharmacy administration • practice management • pharmacy management • pharmacy systems • human resources • personnel • management • Assumption: these courses included human resources management content even if not reflected in title. • Numbers and credits for these courses were tabulated to determine the prevalence of management course titles and their relative percentage of respective curricula. • Results compared in different groupings of schools. • Phase II (Sept 2003-June 2004): • 9/2003 - 10/2003: 13-question web-based survey developed, piloted, and revised using Catalyst™ Toolkit. • 10/2003 - 11/2003: Introductory e-mail sent out to instructors (87 US and Puerto Rico AACP member schools) likely to provide human resources management coursework based on personal knowledge, AACP directory listing, or School/College of Pharmacy website information. Survey website opened, and appropriate parties invited to participate. • 11/2003 - 1/2004: Sent e-mail as reminder to participate at four and six weeks after survey website opened. Survey website closed 1/16/04. • 2/2004 - 6/2004: Data retrieval and analysis. Determine the specific amounts and nature of human resource management curricula in pharmacy schools BACKGROUND • Changes in pharmacy practice and the roles of ancillary personnel have prompted recommendations of human resources management-related education in schools of pharmacy from: • The Pew Health Professions Commission • AACP • ACPE • Purpose of this project is to determine the extent to which these recommendations are being followed. IMPLICATIONS Data show the majority of schools offer some HRM curricula. Further research is needed to determine whether or not the quantity and nature of content in these programs is satisfactory to prepare future Pharm.D.s for supervisory/management responsibilities.
