Areas that Mortuary Science Developed • The school of mortuary science • Agencies controlling the activities of the schools • Committees which advise and recommend action to the agencies • Legislative action through the state board
Commercial vs. Non-Commercial • Commercial Schools • operated by embalming companies • public • Non-commercial Schools • private • rare • limited demand for embalmers • high cost of instruction
Lectures in the Non-Commercial Schools • Lectures included and were limited to: • anatomy • bacteriology • practical embalming • disinfectants • contagious disease • What were they missing?
Agencies, Conferences and Councils • American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) • Recognized by the U.S. Office of Education as the accrediting agency for mortuary science schools. • Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards (CFSEB) • They administer the Nat’l Board Exam
University Mortuary Science Education Association (UMSEA) • Members are from the public community colleges and universities. • Purpose is through higher education adherence to highest principle, to advance the profession of funeral service. • Mortuary Science Program has to be a member
National Association of Colleges of Mortuary Science (NACMS) • Goal is the advancement of mortuary education. • Purpose is recommendation of faculty qualifications, improvement of physical facilities and equipment, and progressive expansion in the education program.
Licensing Laws • Increase educational requirements • Public interest/scrutiny of licensed professionals

Other interesting information about JFDA • the association has underwritten educational programming through Yeshiva University in New York City • Annually they present a seminar on bereavement and grief

Assignment • Write out the year formed, the purpose, and anything else you find interesting about the association. For numbers 9 and 10 pick two other associations listed in the book you find of interest and follow the same format as the other 8 associations listed. Theses are worth 2 points each for a total of 20 points.
