  2. Rocklin Academy - History • Original Rocklin Academy Charter • Opened in 2001 at Granite Oaks Middle School 100 students strong grades 3-6 • Moved to Valley View Elementary in 2003 grades K-8 • Moved again in 2005 to Ruhkala Elementary • Meyers • Opened in 2007 • Rocklin Academy was growing and Long Term Housing Agreement with RUSD was negotiated • Enrollment capped at 558 K-6 Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  3. Rocklin Academy History • WSCA • Opened in 2009 • RA was always intended to include grades 7 and 8 • Agreement with RUSD could not be reached to allow grades 7-8 • New charter was written and submitted for approval • Charter went through appeal process all the way to State Board of Education Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  4. Rocklin Academy Brand • Outstanding teachers and support staff • Core Knowledge Curriculum • Professional Learning Communities • Highest Academic Performance Index (API) scores in region • Powerful Parent School Partnership • Student body that comes to school ready to learn • Mastery learning • School of choice Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  5. Waiting List • 764 students on the waiting list • 234 of these are Kindergarteners • Where waiting list students live and percentage of students in each location: • Rocklin 34% • Roseville 26% • Lincoln 18% • Other Placer County communities and surrounding Counties 22% • Transitional Kindergarten may further impact waiting list Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  6. Why Expand? • 764 kids on our waiting list • Many more families have expressed interest, but did not apply due to the size of the waiting list • Economies of scale • No room for Transitional Kindergarten at current locations • Growth improves financial strength of organization Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  7. Issues and Options • Can't expand at existing sites due to facility and contract limits • Relocation of existing charter is complicated • Significant time required • Long Term Housing Agreement in place until 2017 • High potential for litigation • Establish new charter at a new location • Many potential commercial site options zoned for schools • Square footage costs are attractive Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  8. Starting a New Charter • Provides the greatest flexibility and control • Allows us to fulfill registration from our waiting list • Campus size of 600+ kids • Offering a K-8 charter as an additional choice to the community • Additional options such as academies • Performing arts academy • Science and technology academy Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  9. Process • Find an authorizer • Prepare financials report • Prepare, approve and submit charter petition • Multiple charter submissions may be strategically required Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  10. Facility Goals • Placer County • Sufficient size • School friendly location • Cost effective • Amenities • Initial research indicates motivated building owners; good deal for us Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  11. Process • Communicate and solicit input from current and potential families on program development • Prepare charter application • Submit charter to authorizer(s) • Hearings • Potential appeal process • Obtain bids for site locations • Select a facility and negotiate the lease • Early recruitment and employment of highly qualified teachers • School opening in Fall 2013 Rocklin Academy Family of Schools

  12. Next Steps • I am looking for direction from the Board on how to proceed from this point forward. I am also seeking advice on how we continue to effectively communicate with our families and approach this development with total transparency. • Questions Rocklin Academy Family of Schools
