Austrade – Who We Are • The Australian Trade Commission – Austrade – is the Australian Government’s trade, investment and education promotion agency which promotes Australia’s international education sector in markets overseas and assists Australian education providers with up-to-date market intelligence
Australian Universities • There are 39 universities in Australia • 38 public and 1 private • 7 universities are in the world’s top 100 universities (QS Rankings) • Universities have agreements with over 100 countries; Australian qualifications are recognized globally

Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) • Cornerstone of the Australian quality assurance system • Australia’s single, comprehensive national qualifications framework • Includes qualifications from schools, vocational education and training (VET) and higher education • The AQF facilitates pathways between qualifications in the various sectors and between education and work • Employers, licensing and professional registering bodies require AQF qualifications
Importance of the AQF • Qualifications are recognised across Australia • Consistency in outcomes • Supports national standards in education and training • Meeting the standards expected by industry • Communicates what Australian qualifications mean • Facilitates mobility of learners and workers

Governance and Accreditation • The Australian Qualifications Framework Council governs the AQF. • 12 members: higher education, vocational education and training, schools, employers, unions and government. Membership is non-representative with an independent chair. • All AQF qualifications must be accredited by government authorised accrediting authorities (some providers have authority to self accredit)

Strengthened AQF 2011 and 2013 • The strengthened AQF was implemented on 1 July 2011 • Full implementation will occur by 1 January 2015 • Comprised of: • A new levels structure • Revised qualification type descriptors • Revised qualification specifications • Revised and new policies
Pathways • The philosophy underpinning the AQF is lifelong learning • The AQF includes an explicit pathways policy • Focuses on student acquisition of knowledge, skills and their application as they progress through their education and working lives
