Experiences Using Office 2010 and Office 2011 (Mac)…continued… Lisa Tomalty, ISTBob Hicks, IST Donald Duff-McCracken
Office 2011 A significant upgrade: • Something Old • Something New • Features that have Improved* • Features they Withdrew* *apologies for exploiting Poetic License ;-)
Something Old Ironically, some of the changes are the return of desired features that had gone M.I.A. • Outlook is back as the email client, replacing Entourage. Outlook was last seen in Office 98 • Office now once again supports VBA (which disappeared in Office 2008) • Note that Macros may still be need to be tweaked to be cross platform (e.g., folder paths)
Something New • The Pallets of Office 2008 are replaced with a Ribbon system, similar (but not identical) to Office 2010* • New ways of arranging items & viewing documents(Full Screen View) • Comes with: RDC, Communicator and Microsoft Document Connection *Ribbon can be deactivated, replicating 2008 look.
Features that have Improved • Works much better with Time Machine & Spotlight • Faster startups and operation of tasks • Cleaned up interface • Sharepoint works much better. • Microsoft Document Connection
Features they Withdrew • Entourage contained a project management tool called “Project Center”, and had Resend and Redirect commands • Must be Intel Processor and OS X 10.5+ • The installer does not automatically remove old versions of Office • Not Microsoft’s fault, but Endnote is not currently working with Word 2011
Outlook 2011 “Outlook for Mac is on par with Windows Outlook with this release.” – not quite, but a good pkg. • Better than Entourage, but still has some features missing from Windows Outlook. • Uses Exchange Web Services (not Exchange-native MAPI), which has some limitations. • Cannot create server-based Rules & Blacklists • No notice when recipient is out of office.
Outlook = Mailtourage • Looks like cross between Mail.app & Entourage Mail.app Entourage Oulook
Office 2011… • A great upgrade, two thumbs up. • Office 2008 users will find it an easy migrate (not like the move to 2007) • The return of Outlook, a great Exchange Client • VBA returns for Macro-heads • Needs Intel and OS X 10.5+
