  1. Upgrading to eB and Beyond. Joe Meditz Global Learning and Support Mount Laurel, NJ Jcm@qad.com

  2. Progress Conversion • Install Progress 9.1 on the database server • *Please note: Your O/S may need to be upgraded to accommodate the new Progress version. • Convert your source database to Progress 9.1 using the utilities provided (the utilities are located in the 83dbutils directory). • *Please note that your db must be multivolume if it isn’t already.* • You’ll first need to truncate the bi file using your source Progress version. • To convert from Progress 6, use the 83conv68 utility.

  3. Progress conversion (cont’d) • For Progress version 7, use the 83conv78 utility. • For Progress version 8, use the proutil <dbname> -C conv89. You will also use this same utility once your Progress 6 and 7 dbs have been converted to Progress 8. • Next you will need to convert your db to a multivolume db, if it isn’t already. These utilities are located in the 83makemultiv directory. • Once you’ve accomplished this, it’s time to move on to the MFG/Pro conversion.

  4. MFG/Pro Conversion Steps • Install QAD eB as per the instructions in the Installation and Conversion Guide. • Create a target db using a copy of the mfgempty db created during the installation. • It’s a good idea to use a copy of mfgempty rather than the original. If something goes wrong, you have to recreate mfgempty from scratch. • Start MFG/Util and access the QAD Conversion shell from the Database menu. • Answer the environment-related questions in the User Interface screen. • Next, you may want to run some of the listed reports that show custom menus and messages you have created as well as other db-related information.

  5. MFG/Pro Conversion Steps (cont’d) • After running the reports, you will then dump the data from your db using either the background or foreground dump process. • If you have custom browses or custom field/procedure help, you will need to dump the GUI, CFG and HELP dbs, if applicable. • After dumping the data, you will then load it into the appropriate db(s). • You will then perform an index rebuild on the target db.

  6. MFG/Pro Conversion Steps (cont’d) • One of the final steps you will perform is to run the Target Version programs from MFG/Util. Be sure to run all programs listed. • Finally, run utsequp.p to reset the sequences for your db. • You can also dump the sequences from your source db and load them into your target db. • After the sequences have been reset, access the new db and run the same reports you ran against your source db and compare the two. There should be no data conflicts. • And last, but certainly not least, back everything up!!

  7. And finally… • Plan to do this over a weekend (or longer) if you have a large db. • An inplace conversion is possible but you should contact QAD Services for this. • Always do a test conversion first. This will help you troubleshoot and smooth over any rough spots in the conversion. • QAD Support is available via the web at http://support.qad.com or via phone at (856)273-8868.
