  1. Persuasive Writing with P.E.E.L

  2. The Language of Formal Persuasive Writing Formal persuasive writing has the following features: • Use mainly the past tense. • Use logical connectives. (For example: another reason, therefore, as a result of, in fact, as well as, because, despite this, however, in addition, firstly) • Use technical language. • Be the authority(assertive) on the topic. This is called MODALITY (For example: must, obvious, certain, definitely, extremely, clearly, definite) • Use powerful verbs and strong adjectives. • Use facts supported by evidence

  3. How to Construct aPEEL text • POINT: What is the single key point that you are trying to make. Use the words in your question to start your answer. • EXPLAIN: Elaborate. Provide details about the features and characteristics of the key point. • EVIDENCE: Include facts, figures, statistics or sources to support your key point. • LINK: Show how this point is important to the question. This should sum up your point.

  4. What do you Do? Step one Analyse the purpose: What is your point Step two Gather your research Step three Select information that you will need from your research in order to make your point, explainand give evidence to your persuasive argument. Step four Write out a draft on your template sheet Step five Using the sheet construct your persuasive text

  5. Lets look at an example

  6. Why did the Vikings travel? • Step one Want to write a text that persuades the audience to believe there are several reasons for why Vikings travelled. • Step Two Gather research (all your activities would be classed as doing this)

  7. Step three You need to take the main points or relevant information from your research. The following slides shows how you take information, put it together in a persuasive argument.

  8. . Why did the Vikings travel? The Vikings travelled thousands of miles across the sea from their homeland of Scandinavia where they were farmers, fishermen, seafarers and traders. Their homeland was too difficult to make a living on because it had very high mountains and was covered with thick forests. There was very little flat land to farm on and the soil was sandy and not good enough to grow crops. As the farmers had more children there was not enough good land for everyone to share. Only the eldest would inherit the family farm so younger brothers had to make their living elsewhere. This is when the men began travelling to explore other countries. At the beginning they only travelled to trade their goods but eventually they began to raid and settle in many countries. Britain was a good place to raid, as there was much to steal. The Kings and monasteries had many treasures and silver coins and were not ready for the attacking Vikings. Often the Vikings would leave with many treasures and some slaves to trade in their homeland or they would decide to settle and farm the land. P

  12. PEEL FIRST DRAFT QUESTION: Why did the Vikings travel? The Vikings left their land for many reasons besides trade. They also left because their homeland was too difficult to make a living on for their family. The land had mountainous forests, very little flat land with sandy soil which was difficult to farm. The family farm was inherited by the eldest son as there was not enough land for the younger sons . At the beginning they travelled to trade their goods but eventually they began to raid and settle in many countries. The Kings and monasteries of Britain had many treasures and silver coins to raid. Often the Vikings would leave their land to trade but they also raided many countries and then began to settle there.

  13. PEEL Second Draft – Change the language to suit your audience and to make your argument stronger. QUESTION: Why did the Vikings travel? The Vikings left their land for many reasons besides trade. They needed to travel because their homeland was extremely difficult to make a living on for their family. The land had mountainous forests, very little flat land with sandy soil which was difficult to farm. The family farm was inherited by the eldest son as there was a shortage land for the younger sons . At the beginning they travelled to trade their goods but eventually they began to raid and settle in many countries. The Kings and monasteries of Britain were very wealthy and had many treasures and silver coins to raid. Often the Vikings would leave their land to trade but they also raided many countries and then began to settle there.

  14. Audience • Remember that the language you use must be relevant for the audience that you choose. • For example if you are persuading your mum to let you go out you will not say: “yo are you gonna let me out”
