WhyInternational Exhibition for Youth Inventors?? Present and honor outstanding inventions created by the youth from around the world
Purpose & Goal • Promote innovative, creative thinking skills and attitudes in young generations • Develop problem-solving, critical thinking and scientific concepts in young generations • Exercise, apply, and extend knowledge, and generate practical solutions to real world problems • Prepare young scientific talents for future technological industries and global economical opportunities • Provide a vibrant, exciting arena allowing young generations to imagine and create freely • Expand the youth’s international horizons
Origin • 1904: Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation (JIII) was established (http://www.jiii.or.jp/english/jiiiprofile-e.htm ) • 2004: JIII celebrated its 100th anniversary & initiated International Forum of Youth Invention (IFYI) (http://www.jiii.or.jp/tech/young_inventors.htm) The 1st annual International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) was held on August, 2004 at Tokyo, Japan • 2005: Malaysia • 2006: India • 2007: Indonesia • 2008: Taiwan • 2009: Nigeria • 2010: Vietnam • 2011: Thailand
Requirements for Participation • (1) Each invention or device must be created by the youth. • The youthis defined as ages 6 to 19 years old. • The youth must be enrolled inelementary schools, middle schools, high schools or vocational high schools and NOT in colleges or universities. This means that the participant must currently be registered as a school student. • Note:The level of each applicant's creativity is naturally expressed differently according to age. Inventions and devices of all kinds that are created by youth in a wide range of ages (6-19 years old) are all welcome. • (2) Enrollment of every project team is limited to 3 members in the youth category. • (3) Inventions are NOTfor the purpose of artistic beauty display or scientific research report. Each invention or device submitted should meet the following two basic criteria: • Creativity and originality from a technological perspective. • Apparent advantage or benefit to human living
Requirement for Display (1) The invention must be able to be set up for display & exhibition. Materials for inventions may be chosen freely. However, we cannot accept objects constructed from materials that are fragile, dangerous, likely to decay/rot, or involve living animals or plants. (2) In the case that an invention should be a computer program or any material that is not easily understandable in its basic form, the youth should prepare a presentation allowing the judges and attendees to understand. Examples of such presentations include models that show the invention's purpose and function or a display board illustrating its content. (3) The submission itself should not exceed one meter in height, length, and depth or ten kilograms in weight. In the case that an invention or device should exceed the size limits as outlined, it may be substituted with a displayable model that clearly expresses its purpose and function. If the youth wishes to submit a piece exceeding any of the maximums, the matter must be explained to and approved by the hosting organization beforehand. (4) The youth should provide a clear explanation of the purpose, developing process and operation of invention.

Invention Awarded – Example 7 2007 ??? Award Age Level: Middle School Name of Invention: Multi-Functional Field Baton Rewarding Concepts: Compared to a traditional one, this multi-functional baton carries many distinctive features and add more practical value for its use in the field.(1) A metronome was installed, so the runners can be adjusted in accordance with the metronome of their running speed. (2) The baton was installed with the fluorescent light, so that the computer operation may accurately reflect the posture of the runner and further correct the runner’s posture for best performance (3) The batons can be connected to the mainframe. Every runner’s condition and the gap of time among runners may all immediately appear on the stadium Score Bulletin, which the audience finds more exciting. (4) East and simple to operate; convenient to carry. Attention!! Girls can be excellent inventors!! How exciting!!
Invention Awarded – Example 8 2007 ??? Award Age Level: Middle School Name of Invention: Walkman Tape Cutter Rewarding Concepts: Cost for this tape cutter is much cheaper than the traditional stand. The design is most convenient for students to put in pockets and carry for classes and to be used in open spaces for activities. This invention is the most creative due to its cutter design. First, the tape is inserted into the ring from the bottom and goes through the hole with the adhesive facing the cutter. Whenever the tape is pulled up, the gap becomes the leading edge of a force. Once the tape is pulled back, the cutter will glide it back to another location. The cutter only requires two hands to complete a complex task. Controlling the length of tape is also quite convenient. When the tape runs out, do not discard the cutter. It can be removed and loaded onto a new roll of tape to continue its use, in line with the concept of environmental protection.
