Objectives: • REVIEW and analyze effectiveness of culturally based teaching strategies implemented since Session 4. • EVALUATE linguistic elements specific to foreign language of study (phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics). • RECOGNIZE the changing nature of language and the accompanying changes necessary for teaching the foreign language. • IDENTIFY key differences in the varieties of expressionof the foreign language in culture, vocabulary, and customs. • INVESTIGATE the use of technology to increase cultural exposure and understanding (for teacher and students).

What is Linguistics? • What do you already know about linguistics? • Made up of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. • Handout 5.2 Graphic Organizer - Web • Handout 5.3 - read and list 2 examples for each discipline, one in English and one in Spanish. • When and with what materials do you think this graphic organizer might work best? • When and how do you already use graphic organizers in the classroom?

Understanding Linguistics • Handout 5.4 Read and assess your level according to the ACTGL guidelines. • Return to Handout 2.4 & Set goals for increasing your knowledge on linguistics based on ACTFL • Example of Annolighting a text (section of reading from Handout 5.5) • At Home –Read over Handout 5.6 and practice by annolighting information for lesson 2 on Handout 5.5 • Morphology, Syntax & Semantics –Group jigsaw activity Lessons 3, 4 & 5

  12. Incorporating Technology • What is your unique technology situation at school? • How can you use the websites in Handouts 5.7 & 5.8? • What are the barriers to your using the technology presented in the handouts? • How can you overcome these barriers?

  13. Planning for Technology • Read over Handouts 5.9 – 5.12 at home and practice the FORM strategy • On Handout in your folder “Integrating Tech into your Unit Plans” choose at least 3 technology resources from the previous handouts and complete the chart. • Quick Share

  16. Homework • Bring Print out of Handout 6.1 or save to your laptop from www.tfrresources.org with data from the first administration of the Diagnostic Assessment recorded. • Finish filling out Handout 3.12 (one for each student) and transfer data to Handout 6.1
