A6 Identifying Liquids • Today’s Target: To identify the two (2) liquids from an unknown mixture. • Introduce A6 • Review lab safety • Gather data • Clean up
A6 Identifying Liquids • Read background on page A-21 • Draw the data table on page A-24 • Lab safety – Goggles and aprons; wash your hands • Clean your tray before using it. • Work in groups of 2 • One group tests liquid A • The other group tests liquid B • Carry out each of the tests on your liquids (See page A-23). • Use the dropper to get ONLY the liquid you are testing. • Complete the data table on page A-24.
A6 Identifying Liquids • Clean up • All liquids from the vials goes in the waste container and the front of the room. • Wash and dry all equipment using soap and water. • Wash and dry the station using soap and water. • Place fresh paper towels on the tray. • Arrange all the equipment neatly. • MAKE SURE THE CAPS ARE ON THE LIQUIDS AND THE CORRECT DROPPERS ARE ON TOP. • Wash your hands.
Exit Ticket • Take out a 3x5 card and put your name, today’s date, and this period in the upper right hand corner. • Answer the following question on your card: • Do you think THE ORIGINAL MIXTURE was toxic and why? • DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD!!!
A6 Separating Liquids • Do Now for 9/18/13 • Take out write up and data for A6 • HW: Complete EXPANDED ANSWER # 1 for A6
A6 Separating Liquids • Today’s Target: To identify the two (2) liquids we were able to separate from our unknown mixture. • Do you think THE ORIGINAL MIXTURE was toxic and why? • Collect project • Review data • Discuss analysis • Rubric for #1 • Expanded answer for #1
A6 Separating Liquids • Use the data and the table on page A-25 to identify the liquids. • Answer Analysis 1,2,
Expanded Answer – Worth MORE than a test grade!!! • Expanded answers are an example of your BEST work. • You explain what you think and WHY you think that. • You use EVIDENCE to support your answer. • A6 Number 1 rubric • Write an expanded answer for #1. DUE TOMORROW
**Grading*** 4= 95 3=80 2=70 1=60 3 2 1 Total: Divide by 3:
*** The only way you can get a 4 (95%) is to get all 3’s on the top portion. If you have a 2 or a 1 then you are unable to do the bottom half . • For right now, to make a 4 you will only need 1 yes in the second box. Later on in the year you will be asked to have 2, 3, or 4.
Bonus: • Anyone and everyone is capable of getting the bonus. There is not a minimum or maximum requirement. • To get a 100%- you must have all 3’s on top, at least 1 yes on the bottom, and a good opening and closimg. • The highest one can make is a 105% (All 3’s on top, at least 1 yes on the bottom, a good opening and closing, and type your answer)
Level 1: Bad science- 1 week to revise and resubmit -65% • You identify evidence and or • You explain what you think the evidence means • Level 2: Good science; need more info-75% • You explain what you think the evidence means. • You use some evidence to support your ideas. • Level 3: Good science; info is complete-85% • You use evidence to support a logical interpretation of the data. • You evaluate the source, quality, and/ or quantity of evidence. • Level 4: Great Science -95% • You accomplish level 3 and go beyond in some significant way such as: • You present thorough examination of evidence • You connect your ideas with the science concepts learned. • You provide an explanation for why alternative ideas were discarded. • You provide suggestions for further relevant investigations • You include a diagram or visual to clarify your ideas.
Exit Ticket • Take out a 3x5 card and put your name, today’s date, and this period in the upper right hand corner. • Answer the following question on your card: • Would you feel safe pouring this mixture down the drain? Why or why not? • DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD!!!
Do Now for 9/19/13 • Take out A6 #1 and your rubric • HW :Safety quiz on Monday • Scientific Method Song
A6 Separating Liquids • Today’s Target: To develop an answer to the analysis questions that are correct and use evidence to prove I am right. • Expand and peer edit #1 • Revise #1
Final analysis report A6 #1 Work on your final copy of analysis #1 from A6 When finished hand to a peer to review use the white feedback form to grade your peer. (Edit and re-write)
A6 Separating Liquids - Vocabulary • Toxic -A4 • 1. Chemical property: A specific result of a test with a chemical reagent. Chemical properties include pH, the production of a salt when an acid reacts with a metal, or a unique color change in a chemical reaction. • 2. Miscible: Two or more substances that can be mixed together in any ratio to form a single phase without separation. • 3. Physical property: A characteristic of a substance or material, such as color, density, flexibility, hardness. These properties help identify pure substances and never change whether there is a large sample or very small sample of material. They are intrinsic properties.
A6 Separating Liquids • Key Concepts: Write these down and give an example from the previous activities where this is shown. • Substances have characteristic properties such as density, that are independent of the amount of the sample. • Ex. No matter how much or how little we have, Liquid B will always float on top of Liquid A. • Scientists use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret data. • Ex. pH paper is used to tell if something is corrosive. • Scientific explanations emphasize evidence. • Ex. We are determining what liquid A and B are based on their characteristics, NOT by guessing.
A6 Lab Check • Title, Challenge, Safety – 5 points • Data Table with data – 5 points • All Analysis questions answered – 5 points • Additional Worksheets • Key Points with examples – 5 Points • Total = 25 points
