Colossians 1:4-5 • Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel . . .
Faith, Love, and Hope Faith is the soul looking upward to God; love looks outward to others; hope looks forward to the future. Faith rests on the past work of Christ; love works in the present; and hope anticipates the future. -The Bible Knowledge Commentary
Hope deferred makes the heart sick . . . Prov. 13:12
Colossians 1:5 • For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel . . . • For is a function word used like “because of” • I can’t sleep for the heat. • I can’t sleep because of the heat.
Col. 1:5 • . . . Because of the hope which is laid up . . . • What are we doing because of the hope we have laid up for us? • Loving the Saints • Practicing our Faith
Hope from the Gospel Look at vs. 5. • The truth of the gospel includes a tremendous confidence, a blessed hope, in the 2nd Coming of the Lord.
Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ . . .
Ascension • Acts 1:11 • Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
Turn to 1 Thess. 4:13-18.
He is Coming. • Revelation 22:12 • And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
Our Hope • Our hope is in Him and His promise of reward. Turn to 1 Peter 1:3-5.
1 Peter 1:3 • Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively [living] hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead . . . Everyone born again has a living hope.
Hope in Christ • 1 Corinthians 15:19 • If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. If hope is confined to this earth, what’s the point?
Hope in Heaven • 1 Peter 1:4 • To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you . . .
Commentary • Peter showed those persecuted Christians how to look past their troubles to their eternal inheritance: life, righteousness, joy, peace, perfection, God’s presence, Christ’s glorious companionship, rewards, and all else that God has planned in the Christian’s heavenly inheritance. -J. Wrong Motive • Matthew 6:1 • Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: • otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
Motive Matters • Matthew 5:46 • For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? • do not even the publicans the same?
1 Corinthians 3:8 • Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. • Compare this to “bringeth forth fruit” in vs. 6.
Epaphras is an Example. • Colossians 1:6-7 • Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ . . .
My Reward • God’s plan for reward for believers is NOT based on “closing the deal,” but he rewards anyone who sows and waters gospel seeds. • Inviting someone to church or a Bible study is an example of watering. • Sharing the gospel is an example of planting.
Making decisions and choices based on one’s faith in God’s promise of reward for good works is encouraged!
Luke 6:35 • But love ye your enemies, and • do good, and • lend, • hoping for nothing again; • and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
How Awesome is God: • He pardons my iniquity through Christ. • He rewards me for doing good when I do good works in and for His name.

Command with Promise • Mark 10:21 • Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
Mark 10:29 • And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s . . .
Mark 10:30 • But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. • This is not a fairytale promise.
