Methodology The accountability report measures the performance of cohorts (groups of students) using 7 performance indicators.
Cohorts The Chancellor’s Office created a series of cohorts from the 2000-2001 academic year consisting of first-time freshmen. The Cohorts represent students that completed at least 12 units in the community college system over a 6 year period.
First Time Freshmen are: • Students who have entered college for the first time in summer or the subsequent fall • Students who are taking 6 or more credits in courses anywhere in the California Community College System (except physical education) • Excludes special students who are enrolled in K-12
Colleges are measured on 7 Performance Indicators
Seven Performance Indicators Student Progress and Achievement Rate Percent of students who earned 30 units Persistence Rate from Fall to Fall Vocational Course Completion Rate Basic Skills Course Completion Rate Basic Skills Improvement Rate ESL Improvement Rate
Progress and Achievementcounts students who: Earned an AA or AS Earned a Certificate of 18 hours or more Transferred to a 4 year college/university Achieved ‘transfer prepared’ status Achieved ‘transfer directed’ status
‘Transfer Prepared’ status • Student who earned 60 transferable units with a 2.0+ GPA
‘Transfer Directed’ status • Students who completed transfer level math and English
Strategiesfor: Access and Success
Students earning 30+ units A percentage of the cohort of first-time students who earned 30 units within six years of entry
The percentage of first time students in the fall who return and re-enroll the next fall. Persistence Rate
Vocational course completion • Students in credit vocational courses • Success is defined as having been retained to the end of the term with a final course grade of A, B, C, or CR
Basic Skills Course Completion Rate • Students enrolled in credit basic skills courses. • Success is defined as having been retained to the end of the term with a final course grade of A, B, C, or CR.
Basic Skills Improvement Rate • Students who successfully completed an initial basic skills course were followed across three academic years. • The BSI improvement rate calculated the percentage of students who successfully completed a higher-level course in the same discipline within three academic years of completing the first basic skills course. An example: a student who completed and passed English - 150 and then English-1A.
ESL Improvement Rate • Students who successfully completed an initial ESL course were then followed across 3 academic years • The ESL improvement rate calculated the percentage of students who successfully completed a higher-level ESL course or college level English course within three academic years of completing the first ESL course.
