College Writing II Week 5 Today’s Goals: E-portfolios Working with quotes
Schedule Update • Week 5: working with quotations; finish Essay #1 • Week 6: Begin Unit II • Summary • Thesis statements • Transition/topic sentences • Paragraph structure • grammar
E-Portfolio • Why use Bunker Hill’s E-portfolio system? • Grading time • Ease of system • no thumb-drive • Works as an academic portfolio for the future • Paperless
Quotations Quotation Metaphors: • Hit-and-run • Court evidence • Quote Sandwich
Working with Quotes • Quote Sandwich: • Introduction w/ signal phrase • Actual quote from essay • Explanation and analysis
Quotations Introduction: Who is going to say the quote and why are they important? • Health essayist David Zinczenko…. Attributive tag/signal phrase: • Health essayist David Zinczenkoclaims that the public cannot be responsible for it’s own health because “there are no calorie information charts on fast-food packaging” (392). A bad integration would be: • Fast-food companies are irresponsible. “There are no calorie information charts on fast-food packaging.”
Quotations After the quote = explanation (why is this quote important? How does it apply to your ideas?) • Health essayist David Zinczenkoclaims that the public cannot be responsible for it’s own health because “there are no calorie information charts on fast-food packaging” (392). The public cannot be accountable for their own health when they are grossly misinformed about the food they are eating. If there are no calorie charts on prepared food items, then people cannot adequately monitor what they consume.
Homework • Submit Essay #1 via E-portfolio system. Essay #1 Assignment We have looked at two diverging essays on food and public responsibility. It is now your turn to state your opinion and support it using either Zinczenko or Balko. Remember, this essay is to demonstrate where you stand on the issue of public responsibility and to support your opinion. Requirements: • 700-1100 words • due via E-portfolio system by Saturday, March 3, 8:00 pm What I will grade on: 1. Structure. I recommend glossing your paragraphs (just as we did with Zinczenko's and Balko's essays) to make sure there is cohesion. 2. Position. Did you state an original opinion on the subject? 3. Quotes. Did you use quotes thoughtfully? Were they introduced and explained?
