EXTRACT 1: SETTING IN A THEATRE • Suggested by George who says ‘let him get back to the wings’ which is a specific area of a theatre stage • The stage directions state ‘Specs is not in costume’ suggesting the others are in costume, and may be in dress rehearsal stages • Late stages of rehearsal – George: ‘one week from now…’ TIME • George speaks about the playwright Oscar Wilde in the past tense suggesting that he is dead, and that this is set more recently • Rose comments on ‘Health and Safety’ which is a modern phrase • On speaking of when the play they are rehearsing was written, George says ‘It was a long time ago’
EXTRACT 2: SETTING A BROKEN WORLD; • TRAVELLER: ‘Do you know how long it will take to build this city again?’ suggests the city has been destroyed and ‘We can use these stones’ suggests there are leftovers/debris • WOMAN: ‘The world was full of things’ suggests that now it may be empty • 2nd: ‘There are no birds, there are no trees…’ suggests that there is little life left • Stage direction ‘the woman gives a kind of scream from the house’ suggests that if they have a built up shelter, that they have had some time to do so and may have been here for some time
EXTRACT 3: SETTING IN A CHURCH HALL • Stage directions state that Margaret is placed under a crucifix suggesting a religious environment • Katrina: ‘it’s no smoking in here by order of the church’ suggests that they are in the church and bound by these rules AT A JUMBLE SALE Margaret states ‘…here I am at a bleedin’ rummage sale’ TIME • Character names; Gwenda and Margaret are old fashioned names these days
EXTRACT 1: ACTION THE CHARACTERS ARE REHEARSING FOR A PLAY; • ALLAN; ‘Well it’s your rehearsal’ • GEORGE; ‘Get back to the scene’ • GEORGE: ‘In front of a live audience, one week from now…’ BUT IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE GOING WELL; • GEORGE: ‘You seem to have set out to deliberately sabotage it’ • ALLAN: ‘ At this rate we won’t even get to the next scene’ AND THEY SEEM TO TAKE THEIR FRUSTRATION OUT ON SPECS; • ALLAN: ‘Specs should have told me. He normally gives me my cue’ • GEORGE: ‘He is dysfunctional. He’s got a certificate to prove it’ • ALLAN: ‘In so far as anything about Specs is normal, yes.’
EXTRACT 2: ACTION It seems the extract focuses on each of the characters trying to come to terms with their environment; • (The 2nd man puts his hands on his face and begins to shake) TRAVELLER: ‘What’s the matter with him?’ 1ST: ‘Laughing. He’ll stop.’ This suggests that this character may be struggling to deal with the change • 2nd: ‘There were no birds!’ suggests he is in denial of what they had, to try to accept what he must live with now • WOMAN: ‘You pretend things have always been like this, but I know better. I have memories…Just give me time, I’ll remember everything’ shows the woman is keen to remember her past And that they are trying to make a decision over their future; • ‘And it may happen again. And again…’ suggests that an event caused this destruction and there is fear over the future • 1st: But-progress. My dear chap, progress’ suggests this character is hopeful of development • 2nd: ‘Yes, I remember, and I am not going through all that again!!’ suggests that this character would rather live as he is
EXTRACT 3: ACTION A group of women are setting up for a jumble sale; • Fliss: ‘Where did you get all these toys from Margaret’ suggests they have various items for sale as does the final choral verse they all sing together: ‘caps and coats and broken boats…’ • The stage direction; Bell-Bell ‘busies herself with the rummage’ suggests she is organising the sale Some of the women have overcome their agrophobia to be here; • Margaret: ‘Well I did it, I bleedin did it. I ain’t been further than putting the milk bottles out in bleedin’ years and here I am half a mile away…’ shows that Margaret is one of these women. • Bell-Bell: ‘I’m glad to see you Margaret. I couldn’t have come without you.’ shows the women are supporting each other Supported by others; • Katrina: ‘I’m not going out there, I can only go out with Maurice or Gwenda.’ • Fliss: ‘Come and help me with Margaret, she can’t get out the car’ suggests Fliss is taking care of the women
EXTRACT 1: CHARACTERS GEORGE: Paranoid; • ‘Are you deliberately undermining me? Have you got something against me?’ • ‘You seem to have set out to deliberately sabotage it.’ Stressed; • ‘We’re going to be performing this play in front of an audience – a real audience, a live audience – one week from now!’ ALLAN: Negative • ‘Do we have to?’ • ‘I’ve never felt healthy here. Or particularly safe.’ ROSE: Kind; • ‘Come here Specs, I’ll look after you’ • ‘I’m just trying to be kind.’ SPECS: Nervous wreck; • Stage direction – ‘He has a terrible stammer’ • Rose: ‘Look at him, he’s shaking like a leaf’
EXTRACT 2: CHARACTERS WOMAN: • ‘ 1ST: Hopeful; • 1st: But-progress. My dear chap, progress’ suggests this character is hopeful of development 2ND: Bitter; Stubborn; • ‘I’m saying am not interested.’ • ‘We live, that’s enough. Let that be an end of it.’ GIRL:Dependent; • ‘I’ve put myself in your hands. You can do whatever you like with me.’ TRAVELLER: Optimistic; Determined; • He stops and looks around. ‘We can use these stones’ suggests he is keen to start rebuilding
EXTRACT 3: CHARACTERS BELL-BELL: Nervous? • Stage directions ‘quietly’ when she says ‘the streets are awful-awful. I don’t know how people can bear to walk about in them’ suggests she is still afraid Modest; • ‘It wasn’t for long’ GWENDA: Impatient; • ‘Then you’ll have to take her home, we haven’t got time to look after invalids’ MARGARET: Nuisance; • Gwenda: ‘She’s causing trouble before she’s even set foot in the place’/Margaret: ‘I cant yet, not on my own.’ Vulgar/Rude; • (stained and smelly knickers)…’They must be the vicars!’/’You look like Shirley bleedin Temple!’ FLISS: Caring/Supportive • ‘I’ll walk to the car with you…’ KATRINA: Sharp; • ‘Phones don’t run on electricity’/’It’s no smoking in here by order of the church’ Doesn’t like Margaret; • stage directions states when Margaret enters she ‘turns her back’/’It’s because you’re a trouble maker’

He’ll stop.’ Erratic behaviour suggests he is struggling to deal with loss • WOMAN: ‘You pretend things have always been like this, but I know better. I have memories.’ suggests she can’t move on ACCEPTANCE? • Of the new world? Of each other? IDENTITY? • Did they lose this when the world was destroyed? Is that why they do not have names? Is that what they are searching for?
EXTRACT 3: THEMES/ISSUES FRIENDSHIP • Bell Bell; ‘I couldn’t have come without you Margaret’ shows they are supporting each other COURAGE • Margaret; ‘Well I bleedin’ did it! I ain’t been further than putting the milk bottles out for bleeding years, now here I am half a mile away…’ • Gwenda; ‘Thank you God for allowing Katrina and Bell-Bell to leave their homes’ • Margaret: ‘Congratulations Bell-Bell on having the bottle to get out there on your own.’

Particularly areas of the stage and types of staging (because you SHOULD know this) and voice and movement terms. You will get fewer marks if you do not use the correct language • PLEASE justify everything you say by explaining why and referring to the text • PLEASE write in sentences!!!
