The First PassoverExodus 11-12 • Death of the firstborn would be the tenth plague 11:4-8 Why ten? • To increase the Egyptians’ favor toward the Israelites 11:1-3 • To multiply God’s wonders 11:9-10 • Demonstrate God’s power over the false gods of Egypt 12:12
The First PassoverExodus 11-12 • 12:1-11 specific instructions • Take a male lamb on the 10th of Abib12:3 • One year old 12:5 • Without blemish 12:5 • Share according to need 12:4 • Slaughter at twilight of 14th of Abib12:6 • Apply blood to doorframes of the house 12:7 • 12:13, 11:7
The First PassoverExodus 11-12 • Roast with fire 12:8-9 • Eat with bitter herbs, unleavened bread 12:8 • Don’t leave any till morning (burn leftovers) 12:10 • Eat dressed to travel 12:11 • Must remain in the house 12:22
The Annual PassoverExodus 12:14-20, 25-27, 43-48 • Seven days of no yeast in the house v.15 • Remove it on the first day of the feast v.15 • Eat nothing with yeast in it v.15 • No work on first and seventh days v.16 • Teach children why you keep the feast v.26-27, 13:8 (an important reason for ritual!) • Must be circumcised Jew v.44-49 • Must remain in the house v.46 • Must not break its bones v.46 • All must eat it v.47
