The Midwives • Pharaoh’s command to Hebrew midwives – throw all Hebrew boys into the Nile • Their refusal: “The Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women. They give birth and give birth before the midwife arrives.” (Gen.1:19) • Population increases.
The Birth of Moses • Egyptians began a genocide of Hebrew boys. • Moses was hidden for three months by his parents, but could no longer. • Enter the papyrus basket…
Enter Pharaoh’s daughter… • Moses’ own mother nursed him & returned him to Pharaoh’s daughter to adopt. • She named him Moses (“has been born”)
Moses’ Mission Begins • Moses is about 40. • Witnesses the striking (flogging) a Hebrew slave by an Egyptian. • Moses kills him and hides the body in the sand.
Pharaoh wants Moses put to death. • Moses runs to Midian, but returns later to challenge the new Pharaoh.
