Outline of presentation • To explain how Leicester shire is seeking to maintain Progress File principles and practices against the backdrop of the wider 13-19 agenda. • Understand the background and context for Progress File and ILP developments in Leicester shire. • Have a clearer idea of the features of the Leicester shire e-PF/ILP product and our preliminary thoughts about opportunities for inter-operability.
What is Progress File? • Progress File is a set of interactive materials designed to help young people and adults plan and manage their own learning and develop skills to: • Reflect upon their strengths and weaknesses • Review their progress • Recognise their potential • Identify realistic goals and targets • Record their achievements • Present themselves effectively • Manage transitions and change effectively
13-19 Context: “Delivering 14-19 reform: Next Steps” • New pathways: • Diplomas • GCSEs • Foundation Learning Tier • Apprenticeships • Functional Skills. • Focus on IAG – requirement for a Learning Prospectus [13-19], on line application system and an e-ILP. • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills [PLTS]. • Focus on skills and personal development in the new secondary curriculum.
The Leicester shire e-PF/ILP product Post-16 e-PF/ILP [JISC funded project through Loughborough College 2003-05] Characteristics: Interactivity: Internal links and links with MIS Accessibility: Learners must be able to set their own display preferences. Especially important for visually impaired learners. We are using ‘ACCLIP’ specification. Interoperability: Information about the ‘well rounded’ achievements of the learner must be able to be transferred from stage to stage – KS3-KS4, KS4 – Post-16, Post-16 - University
The Leicester shire e-PF/ILP product • 2005 -08: Key Stage 3 and 4 versions developed • Linked to “LeCAP” and “Coursefinder” [Learning Prospectus] • 18 schools and colleges involved in a “managed roll out” • Some of the big issues: • Moving the e-ILP across key phases of learning • Inter-operability with LeCAP [on line application system] • Capacity of schools to deliver a “process” that leads to a sound product for the learner [the e-ILP]
Leicester shire JISC PIOP Project – Outputs by 2009 • Make our KS4 e-PF/ILP accessible to JISC PIOP partners - usernames and passwords will be forwarded to all partners (end of November 2008). • A test student account will be made available for partners to access and use(end of November). • We will produce a web service to enable partners to export an XML file (using the LEAP2a specifications) that can be used to populate their own applications if they so wish (end of January 2009). • Produce an importer that can populate our own e-ILP based on the LEAP2a specification seeking to import JISC partners exported files.
Leicester shire JISC PIOP Project – Outputs by 2009 [cont] All the above deliverables will be fully documented and made available to all JISC partners. • Which aspects of our e-ILP we want to export. • The mapping process of our e-ILP fields to the LEAP2a • specification. • The coding to produce the exporter. • The coding to produce the importer. • End of project report detailing successes, issues confronted and our overall view of the LEAP2a specification as a tool to aid transfer of data.
