Benefits to Public • Secure Public health from hazard of radiation from illegal traffic. • Secure International trade and contribute to its growth. • This will certainly generate employment. • Employees associated with cargo handling will be safer.
Benefits to Government • Contribute to National Security and enforcement of Law by preventing illegal transportation of radioactive substance. • Secure trade links between Bangladesh and the USA and other Trade partners. • Enhance CPA’s own security. • Express govt.’s commitment to the international community in maintenance of global security.
Commercial Benefits • Allow containers shipped from CPA to quickly enter into commerce in the USA, Europe and other destinations. • Reduce lead time for exporters and increase competitiveness. This will certainly reduce the trading cost of the shippers. • Increase safety feelings among trade partners.
Implementation Experience • Very Early Stage. • MOU Concluded on 17 November 2008. • Preliminary survey by the USA team conducted in February • Parties identified potential locations of RPM’s and CAS. • Design requirements will be finalized in June.
Resource Requirements • CPA and Customs will provide staffing for operation of the Radiation Detection System. • CPA is committed to provide all logistic supports.
Megaport Initiative’s responsibility • Provide Equipment • Installation & Commissioning • Training to operational personnel, testing and Commissioning • Maintenance for an agreed period.
Training • Ten Bangladeshi officials received HAMMER Training on 4-7 May in the USA. • Operational manpower will receive training in the coming months.
Scanning Cargo and Alarm Response • Not in Operation yet. • Trained CPA and Custom personnel's will response the alarm and decide about secondary inspection. • CPA and Custom officials will conduct detailed secondary inspection. • BAEC & Law enforcing agencies will be involved after identification of illegal trafficking.
Sustainability • After project period CPA will take over . • Cooperation from Megaports Initiative will be necessary to maintain the equipment for smooth operation.
