Not understanding in “control” • ATC: Good morning, (Callsign) ,APPROACH identified climb to flight level one six zero unrestricted. • Pilot: Ahh climb one six zero (Callsign), so sorry say again after? • ATC: Climb level one six zero, no restriction. • Pilot: Okay, no restriction, (Callsign).

MANAGING CULTURAL effects • Non-native controllers should be more careful about pronunciation. • Immediate correction should be in mind of controllers. • Ask for clarification to avoid linguistic/cultural misunderstanding. • Do not make assumptions. • Organisations should realise the importance of training English pronunciation. • Be understanding of socio-cultural factors and their influences. • Be aware cultural characteristics. • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your own culture. • Be understanding of different reactions, and be tolerant of different attitudes. • Be open-minded and flexible.
