What do we mean by syllable and stress?Syllable- “A syllable is apart of a word that contains a single vowel or sound and that is pronounced as a unit.” For example –Book has one syllable.Stress-“word stress is the term used to describe the accent or emphasis given to a particular syllable of a word.”For example- father answer begin

  6. Common patterns of stress-1. Many common nouns and adjectives will have stress on the first syllable. For example- people, mother, happy etc.2.In words with prefixes such as-be,in,dis, ex,unetc.the stress is always on the second or third syllable. Example-Begin, Because, Examine,Dislike,Undeerstand

  7. 3. Suffixes, such as-ly,-ible,-ory,-ical,-ic are never stressed.Examples-lovely,impossible,category,logical,economic.4. Compound words which are formed with two nouns are common.They are stressed on the first noun.Examples-Newspaper,Grandfather,Grandmother.5.Usually prepositions conjunctions will have no stress because they are not content words. Example-on, in, and etc.

  8. Intonation: “Intonation is the way that the voice rises and falls as the speaker speaks.”For example-What’s your name?

  9. Common pattern of intonation in English1.We use rising voice at the end of the question type sentences.For example-what is this?2.We use a falling voice at the end of the statement type sentences.For example-It’s a bag.
