  3. Index • Spanish scenario 1.1 Geo-political & administrative territorial divisions 1.2 Environmental and Biodiversity aspects • How do we face the Bird Report process? (Spanish approach) 2.1 Bird inventories & monitoring programmes 2.2 Process & National Expert pannel

  4. 1. SPANISH SCENARIO

  5. 1. Spanish scenario 1.1 Geo-political & administrative territorial divisions • Divided in 17AA.RR + 2ac. • Complete authority on the: management, protection and conservation of the environment within its territory (eg.N2kNetwork) • MARM: - develops base legislation on Nature Conservation - coordinates AA.RR's actions at the national scale

  6. 1. Spanish scenario 1.2 Environmental and Biodiversity aspects • Physical characteristics - Surface - Shape & geographic position - Orography - Geology - 2 insular territories ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS • 4 Biogeographic regions • EU's highest number of taxa (<80.000)* and high number endemisms *The European environment – state and outlook 2010.EEA

  7. 1. Spanish scenario 1.2 Environmental and Biodiversity aspects • Avian diversity 460 sub/species 340 reproductive sp. + migratory, on passage, occasional + non-native EU Bird Species Checklist ~ 540sp ~ 360 sp  peninsular Spain+Balearic Islands ~ 80 sp  Canary Islands

  8. 1. Spanish scenario • In brief: - complex and regionally divided administrative regime - hundreds of bird species that we have to survey and guarantee their conservation • How we do it?

  9. 2. HOW DO WE FACE THE BIRD REPORT PROCESS? (= Spanish approach) Coordination? Execution? Data compilation? Monitoring schemes?

  10. 2. Spanish approach 2.1 Bird inventories & Monitoring programmes • Convention on Biological Diversity (1992) - Identify the components of its biological diversity. - Monitor the identified components. Assess Conservation status, 6years • Habitats Directive 92/43/CEE • Birds Directive 2009/147/CEE 6years: VU 3years: dEX • Law on Natural Heritage & Biodiversity (2007):

  11. 2. Spanish approach 2.1 Bird inventories & Monitoring programmes • Spain and these committments: Close collaboration with: Conservation Associations, Universities, experts… periodically contrats coordinates • Birds: MARM   SEO/BirdLife • executes Bird inventories & monitoring programmes at the NATIONAL SCALE

  12. 2. Spanish approach 2.1 Bird inventories & Monitoring programmes BIRD INVENTORIES • Atlas of reproductive sp. & RedBook - distribution (10x10 utm grid) - population estimate - conservation status –IUCN- - main threats • Wintering waterbirds - census from 1965 - distribution & population estimate, 2000 - population trends (1980-2000)  1980-2010 • Atlas of wintering sp. (2011) • Atlas of migratory sp. (projected)

  13. 2. Spanish approach 2.1 Bird inventories & Monitoring programmes BIRD MONITORING PROGRAMMES • yearly updated information of a great number of sp. at NATIONAL SCALE • Coordinated by MARM • & executed by SEO/BirdLife

  14. Common sparrow From 2008, also in winter = population trends for common wintering birds Moderate decline 2. Spanish approach 2.1 Bird inventories & Monitoring programmes BIRD MONITORING PROGRAMMES = Common Reproductive Bird Annual Survey Allow to obtain population trends through annual census at the same stations, in spring (from 1996)

  15. 2. Spanish approach 2.1 Bird inventories & Monitoring programmes BIRD MONITORING PROGRAMMES = Census of nocturnal birds Allow to obtain population trends through annual census at the same stations, from dic-jun (from 1997-98)

  16. 2. Spanish approach 2.1 Bird inventories & Monitoring programmes BIRD MONITORING PROGRAMMES = Wintering waterbird census Once a year, in January In the frame of the International Waterfowl Census (IWC), coordinated by Wetlands International.

  17. 2. Spanish approach 2.1 Bird inventories & Monitoring programmes BIRD MONITORING PROGRAMMES • = Specific census • To update information on: • Population size & distribution • From 2004  Monographs (36 = 203 sp) 20sp more projected < end 2012

  18. National trends 1 Methodological GUIDELINES Regional trends Cientific Committee W.F.F. Committee RD 139/2011 Nat. Experts AA.RR. 2 • - exclusive to their territory • emblematic • N2KNetwork Acuatic birds Specific census 2. Spanish approach 2.2 Process & National Expert pannel • BIRD REPORT 4 Periodically hires Coordinates Integrative work to national trends + consultation 3 - endangered & spec.protected sp.
