Task: Operate a vehicle in a convoy • Conditions: As an operator in a Contemporary Operating Environment (COE), threat environment, given a convoy brief by the convoy commander, a mission-ready tactical wheeled vehicle, load-bearing vest (LBV), kevlar, protective mask, and hearing protection. Vehicles have not been marshaled into order of march for convoy. Task must be performed under the supervision of the march unit commander.

  3. Special Conditions: Convoy is operating in a COE tactical environment. Defensive preparation are applicable. “Mission-ready vehicle” is defined as a vehicle that has been harden as appropriate, has all preventive maintenance checks completed and is in operational condition. This includes any installed communications or navigation equipment and armaments (as applicable). If the convoy column is not divided into serial/march units the convoy commander will be the issuing authority for all commands.

  4. Standards: Operate vehicle according to specific instructions from the convoy or serial/march unit commander. Exercise heightened situational awareness by performing required scanning procedures to detect enemy threats to convoy during movement. Correctly maintain established convoy interval, speed, and vehicle position within the convoy. Perform all at-halt checks. Correctly react to and relay any hand-and-arm signals used during the convoy. Perform all requirements without injury to Soldiers or damage to equipment.

  5. Performance Steps 1.   In the staging area, move the vehicle into position according to the convoy march order. a. Refer to vehicle’s applicable TM for starting procedures. b. Follow ground guide to move vehicle into march order position. c. Shutdown vehicle, unless otherwise told.

  6. Performance Steps (cont.) 2. Conduct convoy predeparture checks. a. Conduct a comms check b. Identify by bumper number, the vehicle ahead of and behind your vehicle. c. Check load security. Adjust tiedowns as needed. d. Check security of all stowage compartments. e. Conduct sensitive items check. Convoy commander or tactical standing operating order (TACSOP) may dictate items. f. Ensure that assigned weapon is loaded/unloaded according to the SOP or convoy commander’s guidance.

  7. Performance Steps (cont.) 3. Start vehicle on signal or order from the convoy commander/serial/march unit commander. 4. Set the vehicle in motion upon signal or order from convoy commander/serial/march commander.

  8. Performance Steps (cont.) • Maintain the convoy speed and vehicle interval during movement. a. Maintain visual contact with the vehicle in front of and behind you. b. Adjust your speed, interval and position as needed.

  9. Performance Steps (cont.) • Maintain a HIGH STATE of situational awareness. a. Perform side to side scanning (9 to 3 o’clock without an assistant driver. 9 to 1 o’clock with an assistant driver.) b. Watch for threats to the convoy:

  10. Threats • Suspicious individuals or groups along the roadway. • Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) • Abandoned vehicles • Dead animals • Overpasses • Built-up areas, especially multi-story buildings close to road • Intersections

  11. Performance Steps (cont.) • Acknowledge hand and arm signals during movement. a. Adjusted speed, interval, and position as needed. b. Relayed signals to trailing vehicle.

  14. Performance Steps (cont.) • During halt, position vehicle as directed. a. Maintain high state of situational awareness. If in a tactical COE perform the following: (1) Before exiting the vehicle, perform 5-25 inspections. LOOK 5 meters around vehicle then 25 meters for IEDs. (2) Notify convoy/serial/march unit commander of anything suspicious. (3) Conduct vehicle security.

  15. Performance Steps (cont.) • During halt, shutdown vehicle unless told otherwise for mission. a. Refer to TM for shutdown procedures. b. Chock the vehicle.

  16. Performance Steps (cont.) 10. During halt, perform during-operation PMCS on vehicle. a. Refer to vehicle TM for PMCS table. b. Record any uncorrectable faults. c. Notify convoy Chain of Command if vehicle has become Non mission capable (NMC).

  18. Performance Steps (cont.) 12. As directed, move vehicle to the assembly area. a. Follow ground guide, if available. b. If ground guide is not available, follow lead vehicle into the assembly area.

  19. Performance Steps (cont.) 13. Perform after-operation PMCS. a. Refer to vehicle TM for proper PMCS table. b. Follow additional guidance from supervisor or serial/march unit commander.
