ICE (Intensive Course in English) • Led by Nigel Prentice • ‘Pre-sessional’ course for people intending to study in a UK HEI • 3 terms full-time study • EAP focus
ICE (Intensive Course in English) • Programme for graduate students • Termly up to a full academic year • Intensive (five hours a day) • Content closely linked to student need • Emphasis on academic English
Led by Nigel Prentice and June McCready • ‘Summer school’ • For students accepted for study at Warwick • EAP focus Pre-sessional Courses
2 phases over the summer • Open to all international students with a place at Warwick • Induction PLUS • Intensive day • Course designed round degree course content Pre-sessional Courses
Pre-sessional CAN: • Get students through culture shock • Introduce them to UK approaches to study • Develop self-awareness • Give them support in developing the vocabulary of their subject • Start them on required reading Pre-sessional Courses
Pre-sessional CAN’T: • Guarantee a specific level in an attainment test • Effect a huge improvement in general English in 5 weeks • Ensure they will have no further problems with grammar or syntax Pre-sessional Courses

What are students’ earlier needs? • Reading skills • Negotiating (libraries, etc). • Socialising • Survival English • Initial ‘Supervision’ language • Strategic competence - dealing with upgrading after first year
What are students’ later needs? • Sentence and paragraph structures • Grammar • Lexis (Vocabulary) • Writing skills • One-to-one support • Proof-reading and editing • Help in giving presentations
In-sessional Courses(closed) • Paid for by Department concerned • Tailor-made for students on specific course • Attendance required by Course Tutor/ Supervisor • Reporting system between ELT Tutor and Course Tutor
Short Courses • Tailor made course content • Groups of teachers, business people, professionals students • 1 week to several months • Language PLUS • Package deal: accommodation, visits, tuition
