Overview of Salem Witch Trials • First began on March 1st, 1692 • Began by severe illnesses which had no explanation • Teenage girls began to blame women of casting spells on them • Adults began to believe these young girls • Many people were brought to trial from being accused of witchcraft • More people blamed others of being witches in fear of being accused themselves • Nearly 140 people were accused • Roughly 20 people hanged • About 50 people were endangered in some way (beating, tormenting, ect.) • On October 29th, 1992 the trials were ended by Governor Phips • May 1963 the rest of the accused were released
