PESS - where we have come from ..... Established in 2001 as an action from the P.E and school sport task force. Manage the subject effectively within the whole school curriculum; Set challenging targets for raising standards in physical education and school sport; Provide enough curriculum time to teach the requirements of the National Curriculum for physical education in all key stages; Develop young people's physical skills from one year to the next and improve their understanding of the importance of health and fitness; Raise standards in physical education and school sport by establishing accredited continuing professional development (CPD) programmes for all teachers; Support schools in Wales to extend opportunities for school sport beyond the school day by improving the quality and the breadth of after school activities for all young people whatever their age, ability, ethnicity, gender or geographical location; Establish Development Centre Partnerships and ensure they work together for the identification and development of good practice in PE and School Sport.
PESS Review 2010 The purpose of the review was to ........... Identify the impact that PESS has had on standards of Physical Education in Wales; Identify good practice that has resulted from the programme; Make recommendations for the future direction of the programme.
Key Findings from the review The programme is highly valued and having significant impact on broader educational agendas. The DC infra structure is well established and contributes to transition. The resources and training that have been developed are of high quality and are contributing to a progressive curriculum that is impacting on pupil outcomes and enjoyment of learning The confidence of non specialist primary teachers to deliver high quality P.E lessons has improved significantly PESS is contributing positively to the development of key skills. It is impacting on priority areas such as ICT and Welsh language development Higher levels of pupils achievement at KS2 are challenging secondary teachers to review and extend their curriculum
Areas for development Inconsistency across Wales in the positioning of the programme in both the LA and in schools affects the impact of the programme. The huge developments that have been made in primary schools need to progress through secondary schools. Clarity in the priorities of the programme and how this is being measured needs to be secure Good practice needs to be identified and showcased
A real opportunity for PESS Embed all our work into the current educational priorities Well being, central to both the inspection framework and the schools effectiveness framework, CIF and SEF. Professional learning communities are at the heart of our work in development centres. Creating and Active Wales, active young people is a key theme Children and young people strategy Sport Wales Vision - Uniting a Proud Sporting Nation.
Influence and showcase Many ambassadors: Head teachers, P.E teachers, mentors, tutors, young people All these people can help us influence and showcase our work, Listening to learners, meaningful engagement, Young ambassadors in schools ‘adistars’, bronze ambassadors
The future........ Still to be decided The report highlights we have much more to do particularly in secondary schools P.E and school sport need to be established and links made to the wider community More consistency for the programme across schools and LA’s in Wales We must identify and showcase the good work that is happening on the ground. We must embed all our work in schools, development centres and LA’s
Sport Wales ....... Aspires to ‘every child to be hooked on sport for life’ and ‘developing a nation of champions’ High quality physical education and school sport is essential for this to be achieved. Physical literacy is as important as numeracy and language. Is this statement believed across your development centre?
