Hallucinogens “ACID” (LSD) “SHROOMS” (PSILOCYBIN) Drugs that induce changes in thought, perception, emotion, and consciousness “psychedelic” or “out-of-body” experiences usually NOT very addictive
LSD • Hallucinogen • Full name: Lysergic Acid Diethylamide • Also known as “acid” • Typically a small amount of LSD liquid dropped onto blotter paper or sugar cube and then licked
Effects of LSD • Pupil dilation • Seeing colors, objects, shapes • Altered sense of time & emotions • Synesthesia • Mixing of senses (e.g. “hearing colors”) • Loss of sense of identity • Effects depend on environment • Unpleasant environment = unpleasant effects
History of LSD • 1938 - First synthesized by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann from ergot, a fungus that grows on wheat • 1950s – Project MKULTRA • the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) tested LSD on subjects without their consent • 1960s – LSD central to the hippie movement for its spiritual effects Beatles song: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

LSD, Psilocybin & the Brain Both LSD & psilocybin have similar structures to the neurotransmitter serotonin In addition to explaining the effects of ecstasy, serotonin explains the psychedelic effects of hallucinogens such as LSD and psilocybin serotonin LSD psilocybin

Travel Posters • Since LSD & psilocybin allow users to go on “trips”… • We’re going to make our own travel ads! • It’s up to you whether or not you want to make it an advertisement for a good trip or a warning poster for a bad trip • Must include the following: • Reference to either LSD or psilocybin • A catchy slogan (e.g. “Fly high with LSD!”) • Drawings of what you think you’d see on a good or bad trip • Lots of colors • Mention of effects of LSD or psilocybin • You have today and part of tomorrow to work on these posters. Be creative!
