Catalyst 3/14/14 • On your Catalyst Sheet, please answer the following question: • Based on your Alka-Seltzer Rocket lab data, how does the amount of Alka-Seltzer affect the rate (speed) of the reaction? • Based on your Alka-Seltzer Rocket lab data, how does the temperature of the water affect the rate (speed) of the reaction? • When you are done, raise your hand quietly for a stamp.
Today’s Learning Targets • LT 8.2 – I can describe the rate of a reaction using the ideas of concentration of reactants, concentration of products, and time. I can explain how the collision theory impacts rate of reaction.
Today’s Focus Question • What is the typical rate at which food decomposes?
I. Rate of Reaction • A rate describes how fast something changes with time. • Reaction rate is measured either by the rate of formation of product or the rate of disappearance of the reactants.
I. Concentration, Temperature, Pressure, and Rate • As concentration , the rate also increases • As temperature , the rate also increases. • As pressure , the rate also increases. • This is due to the increased amount of collisions
I. Collision Theory • Reactions occur when molecules collide. • Therefore, more collisions, a faster overall rate of reaction. Less collisions, a slower rate.
White Board Questions H2 + Cl2 2HCl • The rate can be described as the decrease of _____ with time H2 + O2 H2O • The rate can be described as the increase of _____ with time NaOH + HCl H2O + NaCl • The rate can be described as the decrease of _______ with time
White Board Questions H2 + Cl2 2HCl • If I increase the concentration of H2, how will the rate change? • If I decrease the pressure, how will the rate change? • I heat the container, how will the rate be changed? • I decrease the amount of Cl2, how will the rate change?
Mid-Class Exit Slip • What is collision theory and how is it related to rates? (2 complete sentences) • As pressure increases, reaction rate will ______. • As temperature decreases, reaction rate will ______.
Hand Back Unit Exams • If you have not taken the unit exam, please take this time now to make it up in another classroom.

Lab Report Structured Work Time • You will be using the rest of the time in class to work on your lab reports on your iPads or laptops • You must upload a rough draft onto my Google Drive at the end of class for credit! • Your rough draft must include at least: • A brief, concise title (2 min) • A full introduction (statement of the problem) (20-30 min) • Your materials & methods (10-15 min)
Directions • Open up this Google Drive site: http://goo.gl/jrxdvp • Click on “Add to Drive” button. (If you don’t have a Google account please make one and sign in) • Go to your Google Drive on your iPad • Create document (+ sign on upper right) • Name your document “LastName_FirstName” (for example: Pan_Kevin) • Hit blue “Share” button on top right. Share with kpan@luskinacademy.net. • Start writing your rough draft. Make sure to save frequently.
