  1. The AKC Club Presidents Challenge 2012

  2. Why a Challenge? • The rights of responsible dog owners are under attack…from 2007 to 2012 there has been a 350% INCREASE in proposed “anti-dog” legislation • The increase in anti-dog and anti-breeder legislation threatens our purebred dogs and our way of life Last year (2011): • HSUS devoted $55 MILLIONto “advocacy and public policy.” while AKC club member contributions to the AKC PAC were $6,662

  3. The Challenge Goal Make the AKC Political Action Committee (PAC) and the Canine Legislative Support Fund (CLSF) strong forces for protecting responsible breeders and all dogs from unreasonable legislation.

  4. AKC Political Action Committee • Collects voluntary contributions from individuals and uses 100% of the funds to support candidates who defend dog owners’ rights. • Donations are pooled to strengthen support for candidates who can effectively influence legislation impacting animal owners.

  5. The “PAC” Challenge • Club Presidents are asked to raise $300 from their membership to support the PAC. • Delegates are asked to stress the importance of the PAC to legislative success and urge their members to contribute. • Clubs will be kept up to date on the Challenge via of a new PAC Newsletter

  6. Canine Legislative Support Fund • Devoted solely to government relations and educational initiatives. • Provides additional dollars beyond AKC’s investment to: • secure additional formal representation in Congress and statehouses • educate legislators and the public about responsible and fair policies for dog breeding and ownership • provide training opportunities for federations and individuals to improve their effectiveness locally.

  7. The Challenge-CLSF • Club Presidents are challenged to have their Club donate $200 to CLSF • Delegates are asked to advocate for this donation from their Club • Clubs will be kept up to date on the CLSF Challenge via of a new CLSF E-Letter

  8. What’s Next • Letters will go to your President with an email to you and the corresponding secretary this week • You are asked to alert you President the letter is coming • Look for an email with more details on the longer range plans to keep this Challenge alive during the years ahead.
