Words of Wisdom • Give and take • Communication • Focus on the prize---the students • Remain positive • Laugh a lot • Be supportive
The Project S.H.I.N.E. Family Album 2002-2004 Julie Marshall and Becky Strickland
Goal of S.H.I.N.E. • Every student would understand the significance of his/her role in his/her OWN educational success and within the community in which he/she lives.
The “S.H.I.N.E.” Approach • Two-member looping team • High expectations • Strong sense of family- United community of learners • Standards-based • Highly integrated content • Real-world application • Service learning
For two are better than one; you see if one should fall, the other is there to pick him up… paraphrased from The Holy Bible
“Let love be your greatest aim.” I Corinthians 13:1 S.H.I.N.E.
Checkerboard Puzzle • The task is to create a checkerboard from the puzzle pieces given. • Pass out the puzzle pieces until there are no pieces remaining. Each person should have at least one puzzle piece. • Taking turns, each person should place a single puzzle piece on the table if they feel it will get the puzzle completed WITHOUT TALKING. If a person does not feel a puzzle piece will fit into the puzzle at his/her turn, that person should be skipped. • First team to correctly complete the checkerboard wins!
Topics for discussion • Effective teams • Teamwork • Interdisciplinary planning
Group Sketch • Your group will draw a structure. • You may use no more than 25 lines. • Each person may only draw one line and then pass the pen. • The person who draws the very first line will be called the group leader. • Each group will have one extra “Special Rule” to follow. You be given this rule now.
Group Sketch Questions • Was your group successful? • How did you feel about your “Special Rule?” • How did you feel when you heard other groups doing different things?
