Organise yourself • Colour code books/ files so that everything belonging to the same subject has the same colour attached to it. • Use dividers to section files into topics/ units. • Once you’ve finished studying a topic, take it home and file it away in a lever arch file.
Stay organised After you’ve finished a piece of homework: • Hole punch it. • Put it into the correct subject folder. • Put the folder into your bag. • Tick off the work in your planner.
Deadlines Write key deadlines on a calendar pinned above your desk at home. …And add reminders for yourself e.g. One week until Maths coursework due in!
How to do good note taking SELECT • the most important ideas. • use correct information. REJECT (i.e. use fewer words) (a) cut repetition. (b) cut irrelevant ideas. (c) Use abbreviations to make things shorter(but be consistent so that you can remember them!) MAKE YOUR OWN (There are no set rules! Do what works for you) (a) Change the wording to wording you would use. (b) Experiment with layout e.g. Try putting information into two columns; fold the paper so you can’t see one column and test yourself.
What type of learner are you? (Try things out and pick what works for you) Auditory ? Visual ? Kinaesthetic ? Visual = You spell words by seeing them in your head; remember events with still colour pictures that you see in your head; and when you concentrate, you’re distracted by untidiness. Auditory = You spell words by sounding them out; remember events with the sounds of that event; and when you concentrate, you can be distracted by noise. Kinaesthetic = You spell words by writing them down to be sure that they’re right; remember events with pictures which have movement (a bit like a film playing in your head); and when you concentrate, you can be distracted by movement.

Record yourself Make topic cards Record a topic title, then all the facts about that topic. Play the topic title, press stop. Say aloud everything you can remember. Press “play” and compare. How much did you remember? Write the name of the topic on one side; write notes about it on the other side. Jumble the cards up (so it’s just like an exam with a random order of questions). Look at the title and say what you remember. Turn over and compare. How much did you remember?
Mnemonics = Rhymes or acronyms (where you use the first letter of each word) to remember something. e.g. • Spelling of Rhythm: Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move • Spelling Potassium: One tea, two sugars. Make chains A chain is where you weave a list of words/ ideas into a story. It’s a really good way to remember a long list of words/ ideas or a list of words/ ideas that need to be remembered in a particular order.
