Opening Hymn: Beautiful Day • The heart is a bloom, • shoots up through stony groundBut there's no room, • no space to rent in this townYou're out of luck • and the reason that you had to care,The traffic is stuck • and you're not moving anywhere. You thought you’d found a friend • to take you out of this placeSomeone you could lend a hand • in return for grace
It's a beautiful day, the sky fallsAnd you feel like • it's a beautiful dayIt’s a beautiful dayDon’t let it get away • You’re on the road • but you’ve got no destinationYou’re in the mud, • in the maze of her imaginationYou love this town • even if it doesn’t ring trueYou’ve been all over • and it’s been all over you
It's a beautiful dayDon’t let it get awayIt's a beautiful dayDon’t let it get awayTouch me, take me to that other placeTeach me, I know I’m not a hopeless case
See the world in green and blueSee China right in front of youSee the canyons broken by cloudSee the tuna fleets clearing the sea outSee the bedouin fires at nightSee the oil fields at first lightSee the bird with a leaf in her mouthAfter the flood all the colours came outIt was a beautiful dayDon’t let it get awayA beautiful day
Touch me, take me to that other placeReach me, I know I’m not a hopeless caseWhat you don’t have you don’t need it nowWhat you don’t know • you can feel it somehowWhat you don’t have you don’t need it nowYou don’t need it now, • you don’t need it nowBeautiful day
Opening Acclamation • Celebrant: • Blessed are you, • holy and living God. • People: • You come to your people • and set them free.
Collect of the Day • Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. • Amen.
Song of Praise: Jesus Christ • Jesus was a man • who travelled through the land A hard working man and brave Well he said to the rich: • give your money to the poor Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave • Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Well he went to the preacher • he went to the law He told them all the same He said: sell all your jewelry • and give it to the poor But they laid Jesus Christ in his grave • Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
When Jesus came to town, • all the working folks around Believed what he did say Well the bankers and the preachers, • they nailed him on a cross And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave • And poor working people, • they followed him around They sung and shouted gay Well the cops and the soldiers, • they nailed him in the air And they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave • Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Well this song was written in New York City Of rich man, preacher and slave Well if Jesus was to preach • what he preached in Galilee They would lay Jesus Christ in his grave • Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Halle - hallelujah Well they laid Jesus Christ in his grave
Gospel: Mark 9:30-37 • The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you Lord Christ. • Jesus and his disciples went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again."
But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. • Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all."
Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." • The Gospel of the Lord. • Praise to you Lord Christ.
Sermon • What One Can Do
The Millennium Development Goals …and what we can do
In September of 2000 the United Nations and its member states pledged to accomplish a set of 8 goals to reduce human suffering across the globe by 2015
Some facts about Human Suffering in 2006 More than 800 million people go to bed hungry every day Every 3.6 seconds another person dies of starvation Every year, 6 million children die from malnutrition before their 5th birthday
More than a billion people lack access to clean water and basic sanitation 5 million people, mostly children, die each year from water-borne diseases Every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria HIV/AIDS kills 6,000 people a day while infecting 8,200 more
Civil war and political unrest displace millions from their homes Meanwhile… high trade barriers prevent exports from gaining access to world markets and weak governments drown in unsustainable debt
In 2006 famine, drought, disease and war combine to create unimaginable human suffering In all, more than 1.2 billion people are living in extreme poverty … and it doesn’t have to be that way
The Millennium Development Goals represent a plan for ending extreme poverty
Global Partnerships between: Governments Businesses Churches Individuals
100 Billion Dollars …a year
SAY WHAT!!! That’s a lot of money How do we do that?
