School Located Vaccination Clinic (SLVC) Pilot Program
Background • Annual on site employee seasonal flu clinics • 2009 H1N1 school located clinics • Requirements for SLVC • Minimal interruption to academic schedule • No fees • Zero or minimal cost to district • Attendance data
Goals • Increased attendance of students and staff • Increased academic achievement • Increased revenue based on ADA • Community decrease in seasonal flu rates
Pilot Project • 5 elementary schools • 3 low income, 1 middle income, 1 high income • Principal and nurse support • Extensive spring planning and parent notification • Research study • 5 control schools • Project assigned to district research coordinator
Barriers • New • Staffing • Service already provided in community • Parent buy-in • Scheduling • Consents • LAIV only / screening of students • 2nd dose issues
Solutions • Partnerships • MedImmune • Medical provider, logistics, communication, supplies • Meridian Pediatrics • Ordering, storage, IRIS input • BSU • Vaccinology and nursing students • District Resources • School nurses • Multiple communication tools for parents • Health Services and Research admin support
Participation • Total enrollment 2818 students • Doses administered 1150 • Overall participation 38% • Range of Participation 29.4 - 51.4 % • Total 2nd dose 292 • Students w/ 2nd dose: 25%
Methods of analysis • Student-level comparison of absenteeism between SLVC group and control schools • Control schools chosen by similar location, size, and demographics • Comparisons of absenteeism (2 weeks or less) for following date ranges: • Prior year • Beginning of school to vaccination date • Vaccination date to end of flu season
Results and implications • Difference equivalent to an ADA increase of 0.5% on average (as large as 1.2%) • 33.7 more students per day in attendence in SLVC schools during this study (6065 more days attended during flu season across these 5 schools) • If done district-wide this would result in 79,920 more days attended • Would result in $1,400,000 increase in district funding per year • Not measured- positive academic and community impacts * post-vaccination analysis indicated a significant difference at the p<.05 level
What we are doing now • Increasing the number of SLVC schools to 10 and will include a high school • Partnerships developed: • Meridian Schools Clinic • BSU School of Nursing • ISU Pharmacy Department • Idaho Immunization Coalition • Further data analyses will be performed
Future Needs • Funding for required supplies and equipment: • Storage • Monitoring • Consents • Disposal • Data entry support • Explore injectable flu vaccine for higher risk student groups • Nursing staff
