DSLRs have for long ruled the roost. There has been very little done towards challenging this dominance. But of late there has been a real challenge to this unquestioned dominance. The status – quo is being challenged by the technological marvel called DSLM. Actually the Lumix GH5, which is considered the best 4k camera, is a camera that belongs to the DSLM family. The acronym DSLM stands for Digital Single Lens Mirrorless. It is a part of the growing compact system category. The DSLM camera provides a true substitute to the DSLR as far as true blue photographers and videographers are concerned. They are able to perform all the functions of a DSLR without the complex functionality or the excessive bulk. So what makes the DSLM a contender to the space dominated by DSLRs? Here are a few reasons:
Small package, big bang One of the biggest distinguishers between the DSLR and the DSLM is the size. DSLRs were often considered the professional’s tool. Their prohibitive pricing pretty much ensured this. All of this changed once the prices of DSLRs slashed, and they became realistically affordable to the photography enthusiast. We saw an adoption of the DSLRs by even novice photographers, though the adoption was still stunted. After much market research they realized that the casual photography enthusiast continues to stick to the simple point shoot because of the bulk of the DSLR camera. To complicate matters more, the mobile phone camera started making massive inroads into the amateur photographer segment. Panasonic camera was the first company that understood what needed to be done. They took the interchangeable lens system and put it into a smaller and more compact body. In 2008, Panasonic launched the world’s first Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens mirrorless camera with an electronic live viewfinder and screen in the form of the G1. This essentially married the convenience of a small camera and the functionality of a DSLR.
Mirror no more The DSLM camera does away with the reflex mirror or prism, a mainstay of the DSLR system. This basically allows for a on-going live readout from the sensor, which is closer to the lens facilitating a smaller lens mount and smaller, lighter body. The live view on the LCD screen is very similar to those of compact cameras allowing for an easier transition for the amateur photographer. More in less Don’t let the small size trick you into thinking that there are compromises. A DSLM camera actually packs in a much bigger sensor than compact camera. A DSLM’s larger sensor essentially means better picture quality.
The game changer – live view sensors The compression of size would have been impossible without ensuring a real-time readout. In act the live view-finder gives a massive advantage to the DSLM range with the options for better low-light visibility, easing composition, easer auto-focus through touch focus. Although the new age DSLRs are adopting this, they still suffer from the bulkiness and the other maladies that affect the DSLR range. All in all the DSLM is a step above the DSLR. It is the prime example of human ingenuity. The fact that the GH5 by the Panasonic Camera Company is the best 4K camera pays homage to the growing prominence of the DSLM system of cameras.
