Purpose of the Sinuses: • Purpose: Hollow cavities of the nasal sinuses function to lighten the overall bone weight of the skull • Increase ability to breathe • Provide voice tone
Four Pairs of Sinuses (bilateral) • 1) Frontal: just above the orbital cavity (eyebrows). • 2)Sphenoid: deep in the highest and most posterior part of the nasal cavity.
Sinuses (con’t) • 3) Ethmoid: between the eyes • 4) Maxillary: • Largest in adults, the sinus covers area from maxillary canine to 3rd molar and upwards
Please note the location of the sinuses on this x ray. If a patient loses a tooth in the sinus region, the sinus cavity will extend down into the location were the tooth was.
