Tuesday April 17, 2012 • Daily goal(s): • Understand how the US tried to remain neutral, how Pearl Harbor ended Isolationism and how the US aided the Allies before it entered the war.
Neutrality Act of 1939 • As WWII began in Europe, America proclaimed itself neutral.
Destroyers-for-Bases Deal • British were running out of ships and money. • FDR traded the British 50 old destroyers for bases on British land.

Lend-Lease Act • US would “lend” weapons/supplies to countries who fought the Axis (Germany, Japan, Italy) • Main recipients of Lend-Lease: Britain, SovietUnion and China. • America would be the “Arsenal of Democracy.” • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixNh5wrBxTo
Atlantic Charter • FDR and Churchill meet before America entered the war in August 1941. • They both signed the Atlantic Charter whichhad 6 main goals for the war: • Defeat Germany first!
Pearl Harbor • Japan did not declare war before the attack. • Isolationism/Neutrality is now over. • Destroys most of the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet. • The Navy Aircraft Carriers were not damaged because they were not at Pearl that day.
