  4. Germany was split • May 1949 Allies join up their sectors • Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) • October – German Democratic Republic (East Germany) • Disagreements have now become total split

  5. NATO 1949 • North Atlantic Treaty Organisation • Western defensive organisation • Would help each other if one was attacked • USSR condemned NATO – said West were preparing for war

  6. Warsaw Pact 1955 • Soviet response to NATO • Eastern European countries now closer to USSR

  7. Arms Race • Berlin Airlift was only USA/ USSR confrontation in Europe • Each side built up missiles in case of war • Armies and air forces also increased
