1. Iron Curtain and Berlin Airlift March 28 (A day)April 7, 2014 (B day) Objective: Students will examine how the term ‘Iron Curtain’ and the Berlin Airlift fit into the wider context of the Cold War through texts, cartoon analysis and various responses. Warm-Up: Answer in your notebook (2-3): “Why were the ideologies of the United States and the Soviet Union in opposition?” Rephrase the question to begin your answer. Reference your notes.

3. What was the Iron Curtain? The term, Iron Curtain, was coined by Winston Churchill, the former prime minister of Great Britain. He believed that communism had created a sharp division in Europe. Mostly , it reflected a conflict in ideology but sometimes real barriers were erected by the Soviet Union and its allies to prevent open contact with the US and other non-communist areas.

6. Germany was divided into fourths allowing each Allied power to run its section with a military government until a suitable national government could be devised and the country put back together.
